# Matterfact for CTOs: Build or Buy a Hedge Fund AI Platform

> Matterfact gives a fund's AI team a production research platform to build on: internal and licensed data in one layer, more than 12 models, and a single-tenant deployment. The team builds what is unique to the fund instead of what every fund builds.

## A head start for your fund's AI team

Matterfact is a production research platform your engineers build on: your internal and licensed data in one layer, more than 12 models, and a single-tenant deployment. Your team spends its time on what only your fund has.

Inside your fund's own tenant (on AWS, Google Cloud, your VPC or on-premise), your team builds on top of five layers that Matterfact runs, maintains and upgrades:

| Layer | What it holds | Who builds and runs it |
|---|---|---|
| Your edge | Your house methods, proprietary datasets, internal apps and agents | Your team |
| Applications | Chat, email, scheduled workflows, thesis apps, API and MCP | Matterfact |
| Agents | Agent swarms, research agents, the data engineer agent | Matterfact |
| Context | 5,000+ skills, 400+ playbooks, team memory, the semantic layer | Matterfact |
| Models | A fine-tuned router and small models | Matterfact |
| Data | Your systems, indexed in place; Matterfact datasets; datasets you build | Matterfact |

Single sign-on, role-based access, an audit trail and zero data retention apply throughout. Outside the tenant, reached only through endpoints your team approves behind default-deny egress, sit the frontier model APIs, licensed data vendors and the open web.

- **Firm-wide.** Matterfact is the AI system at one of the world's top four hedge funds, used on every desk.
- **More than 12 models.** Frontier and fine-tuned small models, each routed to the task it does best.
- **SOC 2 Type II.** Single-tenant, with zero data retention by model providers.

## The model is the easy part. The platform around it takes quarters.

With 95% of the fund managers AIMA surveyed already using generative AI, the question is no longer whether to build an AI platform but which parts to build. The model is an API call. The data layer, entitlements, evals, routing and audit trail around it are where the quarters go, and the engineers who build them are the hires every fund is competing for.

- Engineers account for **44%** of open roles at the hedge funds that list jobs publicly, more than traders, analysts and PMs combined.
- A senior engineer at a top US hedge fund earns **$450K–$700K** in total pay.
- One multi-strategy fund staffed an applied AI group of **about 20** researchers and engineers to build its own platform.

## Most of the platform is the same at every fund. Matterfact runs that part.

Your engineers start where your edge lives: your house methods, your proprietary data and the tools only your fund needs.

**Exhibit 1. Eight components sit between a model API and a research platform. Matterfact runs all eight.**

| Component | Built in-house | On Matterfact |
|---|---|---|
| Internal data | An integration and a permission model per system | Snowflake, SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, SFTP and your MCP servers, with access down to the file |
| Licensed data | A pipeline per vendor | FactSet, S&P Capital IQ, Quartr and MT Newswire, plus SEC EDGAR, read beside your own data |
| Warehouse meaning | Semantic views your team writes and keeps current | A Snowflake semantic layer the agent builds and IT governs |
| Models | A model gateway, plus finance evals rerun at every release | 12+ models, routed task by task and evaluated on finance work |
| Sector methods | Prompts and evals written one workflow at a time | 5,000+ skills covering every industry, and 400+ playbooks |
| Long-running agents | An agent framework your team wires, runs and debugs | Agent swarms that research a name for days or weeks |
| Data no vendor sells | A scraping team | 120M+ podcast episodes, and any website as a dataset |
| Security and audit | Designed, built and taken through review | Single-tenant, SOC 2 Type II, with an audit trail to your SIEM |

*Note: "Built in-house" is what a fund's own team would design, build and maintain. Matterfact connects to the licensed vendors a fund already pays for. Source: Matterfact.*

**Exhibit 2. Building on Matterfact keeps your team in control without making it build and run every component.**

| | Build from scratch | Buy a closed tool | Build on Matterfact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your team's control | Full | Settings and connectors | Extend with skills, rules, APIs and MCP |
| Models | Whatever your team integrates | The vendor's choice | 12+ models, through endpoints you approve |
| Who maintains the core | Your team, indefinitely | The vendor | Matterfact; your team owns what it adds |
| Where your data lives | Your infrastructure | The vendor's cloud | Your own single-tenant deployment |

## Your internal and licensed data sit in one layer every agent shares.

Each source stays current on its own schedule, and every answer stays within what the person asking is entitled to see.

- **Your systems:** Snowflake, SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, Google Drive, Notion, SFTP and your own MCP servers.
- **Licensed vendors and public filings:** FactSet, S&P Capital IQ, Quartr, MT Newswire and SEC EDGAR.
- **Added by Matterfact:** 120M+ podcast episodes, and any website as a dataset.

They flow into one layer inside your tenant, with role-based access from your identity provider, the semantic layer, team memory and a citation on every figure. Agents, skills and apps draw on it; datasets write back to Snowflake, S3, BigQuery or Databricks; and your own code reaches everything through a REST API and an MCP server.

| Source | How it stays current |
|---|---|
| Snowflake | Live query |
| SharePoint, OneDrive, OneNote | On sync |
| Outlook | Every 2 minutes |
| SFTP | On arrival |
| Your MCP servers | Live |

- **Access follows your identity provider.** Role-based access applies down to the file, so each answer stays within what the person asking is entitled to see.
- **Datasets land as governed tables.** What Matterfact builds writes back to Snowflake under the roles and grants you already administer, or to S3, BigQuery or Databricks.
- **The data engineer agent takes on whole projects.** One fund used it to map three retail chains' store footprints, work it had budgeted one to two months for.
- **Public data is checked against its source.** Each public-data tool is tested against the agency's own files, then handed to our finance domain experts and agent harness engineers to break. On FINRA, economic statistics and court records, that found 115 problems. Where a figure would be doubtful, the tool now leaves it out and says why.

## Analysts question your warehouse in plain English, and every answer cites its SQL.

A connector reaches a table; it does not know what AMT_NET means at your fund. Matterfact builds that map as a Snowflake semantic layer your IT team governs.

1. **Read the schema.** Tables, columns and types.
2. **Fill in missing descriptions.** One line per table and column.
3. **Import semantic views.** Your metrics, dimensions and joins.
4. **Learn from use.** Each cited query refines the map.

With the map in place, an analyst asks "What is our net exposure to semiconductors?" and gets an answer built on read-only SQL, with the query cited. A rules file keeps every agent to the fund's preferences, such as "For consensus estimates, always use FactSet" and "Never use web sources for reported financials."

- **Every join is checked against your data.** Before an answer is used, the analyst tests each join for fan-out and dropped rows on your warehouse. On a test warehouse that took it from 22 of 30 correct answers to 30 of 30; prompt guidance alone reached 23.
- **The first draft comes from your warehouse.** Declared keys, view definitions, semantic views and, if you opt in, query history seed the map. Each join is verified against the data before an admin confirms it.
- **Read-only is enforced in the connection.** One SELECT per statement and at most 1,000 rows, run as a key-pair service user under a read-only role, with your masking and row access policies applied.

## More than 12 models work on your research, each on the task it does best.

Frontier models for reasoning and long documents, small models we fine-tune for narrow tasks, and a router that moves work when a better model ships. No single vendor sets your ceiling.

- **Claude** for long-horizon research, such as a revenue bridge for an initiation.
- **OpenAI** for extraction and for writing the IC memo.
- **Google Gemini** for long-context work, such as a 300-page credit agreement, and web search.
- **Small models we fine-tune ourselves**, running inside your tenant, for narrow, high-volume classification.

**Exhibit 3. All four frontier models scored 7 to 17 points higher in Matterfact's agent than in Vals AI's own harness.**

| Model | Vals AI's harness | Matterfact's agent | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Opus 5.5 | 58.6% | 75.6% | +17.0 points |
| GPT-6.1 Sol | 52.0% | 68.6% | +16.6 points |
| Gemini 3.8 Flash | 61.4% | 68.5% | +7.1 points |
| GLM 5.3 | 55.8% | 65.0% | +9.2 points |

*Note: Accuracy on Vals AI's Finance Agent tasks. Vals AI's figures are on its 450 private questions, graded by a panel of three AI judges; ours are on the 27 public ones, graded by Claude Sonnet 5 against the benchmark's own rubrics. Because those tasks are public, some may have been in the models' training data. The eval report has the full method: https://www.matterfact.com/blog/towards-production-grade-evals-for-llms-in-finance. Source: Vals AI Finance Agent v2 leaderboard, October 12, 2026; Matterfact analysis.*

- **The harness can be worth more than a model upgrade.** On Vals AI, four Gemini Flash releases gained 3.6 points; moving Gemini 3.8 Flash into our agent gained 7.1. Claude Opus 5.5 also ran 19 times faster and 15 times cheaper per task.
- **Small models raise accuracy on narrow work.** We fine-tune small models for high-volume tasks such as classification, never on customer data, and they run inside your tenant.
- **Nobody re-platforms.** When a better model ships, we test it on finance tasks. Once your team approves the endpoint, the router moves the work, and your skills, playbooks and apps carry on as before.
- **Latency is modeled from production traces.** Token counts predict a call's latency with an R² of 0.97. Generated tokens are 94–97% of it and the prompt under 5%, so a wasted generation costs far more than a long prompt.

## Each fund gets its own deployment, and nothing leaves it unless you allow it.

Controls vetted by CISOs at top-tier hedge funds, enforced by the deployment rather than promised in a policy.

- **Single-tenant.** One isolated deployment per fund: hosted on AWS or Google Cloud, in your VPC or on-premise.
- **SOC 2 Type II.** Independently audited, with third-party penetration tests. The report is shared under NDA.
- **Zero data retention.** Model providers keep nothing, and no model is trained or fine-tuned on your data.
- **Default-deny egress.** Your team approves each model endpoint, and can bring its own API keys.
- **Your identity provider.** SSO and SAML, with role-based access down to the file.
- **Encryption.** TLS 1.3 in transit, encrypted at rest, with strict key rotation.

## Your engineers extend Matterfact the way they would their own platform.

Write your methods as skills, set rules every agent follows, and call everything from your own code.

- **Your methods, as skills.** Written without code, and run the same way as Matterfact's own.
- **Your rules, for every agent.** House preferences, applied to every answer.
- **Your code, through API and MCP.** Every answer and dataset, callable from your tools, Claude or ChatGPT.
- **Your workflows, on a schedule.** Playbooks that run before the open, weekly or on an event.

- **Your skills build on 5,000+ of ours.** Ours cover every industry, so your team writes only the methods specific to your fund.
- **Each of ours is checked against primary records.** A reviewing agent checks every draft against SEC filings, court dockets and regulator databases. The median review makes 15 changes, more than half of them corrections of fact.
- **Tools you already built connect live.** Your MCP servers plug in as they are, and your own code can call Matterfact in turn.

## The whole firm works on one platform, and compliance can audit all of it.

Work is shared within each team and permissioned by role, and every query, source and output is logged.

- **A better method reaches everyone the same afternoon.** When a senior analyst refines how the firm reviews a print, every agent reviews it that way.
- **New analysts start with the fund's context.** What the team concluded about a name, and why, comes back with the documents attached, on day one.
- **Compliance can see what ran.** Every figure carries its source, and every query, source and output is logged and exportable to your SIEM.

## The fixes travel between funds. Your data never does.

We run one product at some of the world's largest hedge funds. When our work with one fund shows a gap, we fix it in the product, and every fund gets the fix in the next release.

What reaches every fund:

- Sharper skills and playbooks
- New and repaired connectors
- Parser fixes for new filing formats
- Routing changes after a model release
- Evals that catch regressions

What stays in your tenant:

- Your data and documents
- Prompts and answers, stored only here
- Embeddings, indexes and caches
- The skills and rules your team writes

Model calls go only to endpoints your team approves, under zero data retention. No model is trained or fine-tuned on your data.

## Five questions to ask of any AI platform, built or bought

1. **Can it reach our internal and licensed data, and keep each answer within what the person asking may see?** Matterfact: one layer over your systems and vendors, with role-based access down to the file.
2. **Does it know what our warehouse tables mean?** Matterfact: a semantic layer the agent builds and your IT team governs.
3. **When a better model ships, who does the work to switch?** Matterfact: we test it on finance tasks. Once your team approves the endpoint, the router moves the work.
4. **Can compliance see what was asked, what was read and what came back?** Matterfact: every query, source and output, exportable to your SIEM.
5. **Where does our data live, and what leaves the boundary?** Matterfact: your own tenant. Only calls to endpoints your team approves leave it.

## Frequently asked questions

**Does Matterfact replace our AI team?**
No. It gives your team a production platform to build on. Your engineers extend it with skills, rules, APIs and MCP, and spend their time on what is unique to your fund rather than on connectors, evals and model routing.

**We already license Claude or ChatGPT. Where does Matterfact fit?**
Keep them for general work. Matterfact runs on frontier models, including Claude, and adds the research platform around them. Every Matterfact answer and dataset is also reachable from Claude or ChatGPT through our MCP server.

**Which models does Matterfact use?**
More than 12. Claude for long-horizon research, OpenAI for extraction and memo writing, Gemini for long-context work and web search, and small models we fine-tune for narrow, high-volume classification, which run inside your tenant. A fine-tuned router picks the model for each task. We tune the small models and the router ourselves, never on customer data.

**Can we restrict which models it calls, or use our own keys?**
Yes. Outbound access is default-deny: your team approves each model endpoint, and every outbound call is logged. You can bring your own API keys, so model usage runs under accounts your fund holds directly.

**Is our data used to train models?**
No. Matterfact does not train or fine-tune models on customer data, and does not permit model providers to do so. Your documents are indexed inside your tenant.

**What do you learn across clients?**
Lessons about the product, not your book. Working with each fund, our team sees where a skill, connector or parser falls short. The fix goes into the product, and every fund gets it in the next release. Your data and documents stay in your tenant, and no model is trained or fine-tuned on them.

**How do our engineers build on it?**
Through skills and rules written without code, a REST API, an MCP server, and your own MCP servers, which connect live. Datasets land in Snowflake, S3, BigQuery or Databricks.

**We already built internal tools. Is that work wasted?**
No. Matterfact speaks MCP, so the servers your team built connect live, and your tools can call Matterfact in turn.

**What happens if we leave?**
Your work is not locked in. Datasets written back to your warehouse already sit there as governed tables. On exit, your content is made available for export on request, then deleted from active systems within 30 days.

**Can we start small?**
Yes. Many funds start with one team, one workflow or one swarm on a name they cover, and expand once the value is clear.

**How is Matterfact priced?**
Per firm, on an annual contract. Pricing depends on the size of the team, the data sources you connect and the deployment you choose, so it is scoped on a call.
