# Damodaran Says Big Tech's AI Profits Are a Mirage - The AI Capex Tracker - Issue of August 10, 2026

> For the issue of August 10, 2026, a valuation heavyweight's arithmetic went around the tape: roughly 85% of Amazon's and 87% of Alphabet's recent jump in net income came from unrealized paper gains on AI startup stakes, while Meta's free cash flow fell about 91% and Amazon's and Alphabet's turned negative.

## The AI Capex Tracker

### Issue of August 10, 2026: Damodaran Says Big Tech's AI Profits Are a Mirage

---

- **A valuation heavyweight just put numbers on the uncomfortable idea that Big Tech's blockbuster profits aren't really cash.** Walking through Aswath Damodaran's argument, one podcast laid out that roughly **85% of Amazon's** and **87% of Google's** recent jump in net income came from *unrealized paper gains*, the companies marking up the value of their stakes in AI startups like Anthropic and OpenAI, not cash from customers. Meanwhile real free cash flow is going the other way: Meta's fell about **91%**, and Amazon's and Google's turned negative. The punchline: a sub-20 P/E that looks cheap is built on an "E" inflated by circular money, "net income is now a deadly number." ([Deep Values, Aug 8](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOjty8WFfcz0S1rzbZ6qwcpYPbAGzilxp7HOe4biasL2G-2B4I0p6ZBPn-2Fj5VnMIjJGpqqZMRi9iX85JwnDy7xWeMT54xlSCd0868PSu-2FiEFPEEw-3D-3D4qgs_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1Ur6nHaPHdIp0kaHWif0BBEuXdJ4AWsCQlBN0T4u8Fh9uUEaoiiV-2FnE-2FyIb01oe2c08byPTqHjIhww4JiqN3W9b2oLa8mvhOguZjeA161KgXXv9-2F9XH2op1djEB62hYkzxA-3D-3D))

- **There's a second, slower bomb underneath the reported margins: depreciation the companies haven't taken yet.** In Q2, Google spent **$44.9B** on equipment and buildings but booked only **$7.1B** of depreciation, a 6-to-1 gap. Across the top four hyperscalers over the last year, that gap is roughly **$300B** ($434B of capex vs. ~$149B of depreciation). Those costs hit the income statement on a calendar, "whether the AI revenue actually materializes or not." ([Deep Values, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiU9fAxTLzAzIcJ-2BLAQnh6oeixKl5MCKXfmqsdL6caj48doC8TEJ6EX-2FT-2FmhhUREkd4ZR2zrFDKGcuDtV7HVYmJgugNcBtFjvvLqQBxatLRPg-3D-3DqpYR_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UnKLuArcKXazPejWngYRWBn7I3dygOX3vO9ue7H6pMk3sDkG9-2FiIY-2BYeSyjXbQKxaJ-2BXZhyrOX7qLD07H2sCSlZH-2B5K6qeaiGtq-2F4UFc9AFou3hkpfsS-2BxrvjLp7oiPvDg-3D-3D))

- **The bulls have a real rebuttal, and it's worth taking seriously.** Ed Yardeni argues this rally is *earnings-led*, not hope-led like 1999 (multiples up ~18% over three years vs. ~250% into the dot-com peak), with 85% of S&P 500 companies seeing rising forward earnings ([The Compound and Friends, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhzg7aejXUpGltk9pv-2F3vns-2BiRpuky00hWHuhoMksAViFez3JnQXFntU4uPasKhrCmSESSepSOVGlCG9l0sAApyPuAj38autK5d4FcElFOTrA-3D-3D-PwH_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UqU8wqjyQaAi2THI-2ByMi5BfJAdf-2BTtCmpOA2e4vw75W3bo5nQB-2F8Dl2-2FLg3hZ2afMGcBTOpQGtBtuPw-2FgNrTfcFcsjIx8XXuOuv5A3oC6ZCgE6ivzBXjRw72q5gtt7RMhg-3D-3D)). Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson calls this "a correction within a structural bull market… not the big one", think 1997–98, with the real hangover a couple of years out ([RiskReversal, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOitB2ZJ1AjbD4uM2isT-2BL-2BYJ5aFs-2BsPJdzft3A4te0HSUBTirnV-2Fv3zv1yB1KNVVHzwFMmo8I4wxRvUqErr6IewSDziS4hjRfkZZEM27L-2BoQA-3D-3DWlrD_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1Upcf-2Bm34sM7y2HBnsTVeIk-2FqLpb5r0pDJVD3tCnjZW-2BMSHqoC2cBdhqvQmSET1vWwJCFpwpCScy4hUNjE7aDenOyWpF0pRtXgAI-2B-2FP-2FZUYQo8SoYuoigY8BB2wWBaP-2BKiw-3D-3D)). The tell that settles it, per David Rosenberg: the credit market, which "will lead the ultimate rolling over of this AI trade" ([Excess Returns, Aug 8](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOjsh-2B8qFD26hA60o37IumOM30bTGVA5x5cR1p5P3N7t2rQPAGh3nZJHfO6OifJt6VPiOjW-2BbM15RY511Q-2FJcug4wPMVhl1lYqjWRYpLSZPAzA-3D-3Dld_t_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1Um4e892O0YiG5ug7xwwPpPz86p-2FVcvVQ-2FQDn9UsmDwmkFAq4lxJ3MARzd-2BYRleZUAukwDnMSVXhJnI-2Fo2i4gVGs7Lrz8SZorog-2FhRMmvb6cexqq-2BUXA3W8MBnJmc-2FnoS2A-3D-3D)).

## What's new

A note on the window: this is the Monday issue, so it sweeps the weekend plus Friday evening, podcasts published August 7 and 8. Nothing dated August 9 or 10 has been transcribed into the corpus yet, so treat this as the weekend's conversation. Friday's issue nailed down the *circular financing* number (Nvidia guaranteeing ~$500B of OpenAI's spending). Over the weekend the argument moved one level deeper and more damaging: not just "is the demand real?" but "**are the reported profits even real?**" Two accounting threads, paper gains and delayed depreciation, did most of the work, a marquee bull rebuttal pushed back, and we finally got the actual numbers behind SpaceX's first quarter. Ranked by where the dollars of P&L impact land hardest.

**1. The accounting illusion, quantified: 85–87% of the profit "growth" is paper, not cash.**
[Deep Values, Aug 8](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOjty8WFfcz0S1rzbZ6qwcpYPbAGzilxp7HOe4biasL2G-2B4I0p6ZBPn-2Fj5VnMIjJGpqqZMRi9iX85JwnDy7xWeMT54xlSCd0868PSu-2FiEFPEEw-3D-3D0OBg_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UtPIe-2F2fSD-2F64kCFwbrzuTn2YisahTuMmkPvln4MJo1romc8ErNR3s-2BKlqdfI3Z6SnoXbfk6hSL0VmPolWhQAy-2Fme-2BQIPgYxqC-2FXbcO1gQSF3mVSX2SvH86Yc7NsLfCSAQ-3D-3D), a research-recap channel walking through valuation professor **Aswath Damodaran's** recent Prof G Markets interview. Treat the channel as a secondary summary; the substance and the numbers are Damodaran's.

The core mechanic is simple once you see it. Big Tech owns big minority stakes in private AI labs, Amazon and Google in Anthropic, Microsoft in OpenAI, Google in SpaceX. When those labs raise money at higher valuations, the investors get to record the *increase in value* of their stake as a gain on their own income statement, even though no cash has changed hands. The result: "For Amazon, **85% of its net income jump was attributable to unrealized paper gains.** … And for Google it was **87%.**" The analogy the show used is worth keeping: it's like handing a friend $100 to buy your bike, then booking that $100 as proof your bike business is booming, "a closed intra-company circular loop." Damodaran's blunt conclusion, per the episode: "net income is now a … deadly number for these companies," because a P/E that has "artificially dropped below 20" looks like a steal only until you realize the "E" is stuffed with these gains. Strip them out and look at operating margins, he says, and the core business tells a different story.

Two more figures stuck out. First, the *cash* is going the wrong way while the *profits* soar: Meta's free cash flow "plummeted 91%," and Amazon's and Google's "went negative." Second, the leverage is largely hidden: Meta has "$140 billion of debt on the books" but "**$420 billion in off-book shadow debt**," most of it non-recourse and tied to specific data centers. He frames the whole spend as "pure $100 billion FOMO", capex of $150–200B a year driven by fear of being the next Nokia rather than a clear path to returns, and singles out Apple's ~$11B of AI capex as the deliberate outlier (the "don't build the wrong-gauge railroad" bet). Why it moves the thesis: if the market is paying a "cheap" multiple on earnings that are most-of-the-way an accounting artifact, the cushion investors think they have isn't there.

**2. The depreciation time bomb has a number now: ~$300B, and it hits regardless of demand.**
[Deep Values, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiU9fAxTLzAzIcJ-2BLAQnh6oeixKl5MCKXfmqsdL6caj48doC8TEJ6EX-2FT-2FmhhUREkd4ZR2zrFDKGcuDtV7HVYmJgugNcBtFjvvLqQBxatLRPg-3D-3DQ9EI_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UicGmQIiW0UQE61omubfcpVJ097-2FVWii7X8af-2F1nLfVz9YNkt63BMt0QIJRqQabB-2F-2BuJueQJY02pCRRZokn04MuseuBl0IrTRFI81z6JYtPUrZ2Fzxm00pfOX3m6pU0FWw-3D-3D), same channel, on Google's quarter.

When you buy servers and buildings, you don't expense them on day one; you spread the cost over the asset's life (servers 5–6 years, buildings 25–40). That timing lag is flattering margins right now. In Q2, Google "spent **$44.9 billion** on equipment and facilities" but "only recorded **$7.1 billion** in depreciation", over 6-to-1. Across the top four hyperscalers over the past four quarters: roughly **$433.9B of capex** against only **~$149B of depreciation**, "nearly a **$300 billion** gap." The show's verdict on Google's reported 34% operating margin: "somewhat of an illusion… constructed entirely on the premise that the vast majority of their newly purchased assets haven't started depreciating yet." And the scary part: "those depreciation costs are going to hit the ledger, whether the AI revenue actually materializes or not… The bill comes due regardless." This is the single cleanest fundamental test we keep flagging, and now it's quantified.

The same episode had the most vivid *supply-constraint* tell of the weekend: forensic accountants found that Google is renting **110,000 GPUs from SpaceX** at "**$920 million per month**," October 2026 to September 2029, roughly a **$30B** commitment. But the terms read like distrust: after **December 31, 2026**, either side can walk with 90 days' notice. The show's read is that Google isn't signing a lease so much as "executing an **options trade**", paying a premium for the right to compute capacity *today* while dumping the long-term asset risk on SpaceX. The reason a company that invented its own TPU chips is renting Nvidia GPUs from a rocket company: it's not the chips, it's the power and the permits. SpaceX reportedly stood up a 300-megawatt on-site "power island" and racked 100,000 GPUs in weeks by bypassing the grid, exactly the bottleneck Google, Amazon and Meta are stuck behind.

**3. SpaceX's first print, decoded: spectacular growth, terrifying capex, and the read-through for Nvidia.**
[All-In, Aug 8](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOikzxUxIn7DIPb-2BU6ntg4zoHjc-2BANCB6-2F3bU-2BAkIzT-2BmdO07mv8TFvmzOVrWvFLTgRQbJQwZJYGwrq6NT5WTAu7kEjmOJf-2BgRNN-2FrKKSc1uCA-3D-3DRRS0_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UmEsGyHDHvi4xGPGkY63SwBZ5tCrKThZAbQ5GelUxQ5UAq51AeDqPU7yJFPXa1urxXW8TZwcEZTS1YIKHUP5j8ebQNmKCmb-2B5tG2u9XRoKOGh1-2Fx5mjySRbJWebKb2ELVw-3D-3D), the operator/VC panel (David Sacks, David Friedberg, Brad Gerstner and Chamath Palihapitiya). This is the closest thing to insider color in the sweep.

The numbers behind Friday's teaser: SpaceX's Q2 revenue was **$7.8B, up 92% year over year and 67% quarter over quarter**; its AI-compute-rental line ("Elon Web Services," renting Colossus capacity to Anthropic and Google) more than tripled sequentially to **$2.6B**. But capex was **$18.4B in the quarter, 6x year over year**, roughly a $75B run-rate. Shares fell ~13% on the report and are down ~30% since June's IPO, settling around a **$1.4T** valuation (it debuted above $2T). Elon guided to **$100B of ARR by year-end** and pulled the $1-trillion-ARR target forward a year, to **2030** (Morgan Stanley's 2030 revenue estimate is $325B). The math that spooked people: SpaceX plans to go from ~2 GW of compute at year-end toward 5–10 GW next year; at "$50 billion per gigawatt to build, minimum," six incremental gigawatts is ~$300B of capex, and, as Sacks put it, "you either have to go into the market and borrow the money, or you have to do a dilutive equity raise, neither of which they want to do." Which rhymes with the Nvidia-financing story: the demand may be real, but somebody has to fund it.

The panel's other big theme, a direct read-through for GOOGL and the chip complex, was Google's "brain drain." As Google resolves its internal fight over compute in favor of *renting it out* (infrastructure) rather than *training frontier models*, its best scientists (Demis Hassabis, Jeff Dean) have a reason to leave. Sacks' framing: "CapEx is high alpha, low beta… model development, theoretically could be high alpha, but it's very high beta." Gerstner added that Satya Nadella is now citing a Morgan Stanley figure of "over a 30% return on invested capital in tokens as a service", the bull case for owning the infrastructure. And they argued the frontier-model market has narrowed to "a duopoly" of OpenAI and Anthropic (Anthropic now over **$80B of ARR**, up from $10B at the start of the year), with everyone else, Google included, drifting toward being a cloud landlord. One under-appreciated tailwind they flagged: the new capex depreciation tax rule means "every dollar you deploy in CapEx… you're basically getting 26% off," which quietly subsidizes the whole build.

**4. The bear macro: "The Great Unwind", Oracle at 174% of cash flow, Nvidia CDS at a record, the Fed boxed in.**
[Unf*cking The Republic, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOh5Z5A-2Bp0UcR9i6EiAFpOXRfQenFqu5WYXw-2BF377hExrc68Qmp2WKLxEmxUDFu55ij8E6R0oyv3a3ljbhh3w96NIrvkE6-2BNncm69p3U-2F44png-3D-3Du0FH_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UhTaWblJOHVPQTKbFq91hs-2BR6QYgACdF-2F1fo2CEnBgJHIrSR-2BKaTkXHIMIlsUs85hcdXy4CmtW2c4hPZrqQMOk6VO7-2BdRXOTy1DGpGzThjLu-2B9owxWE3tnqi1Tm-2FugmaRQ-3D-3D), an opinionated macro monologue. Provocative by design; the citable parts are the specific figures.

The spine of the argument: the industry has run out of internal cash and is leaning on the debt markets, and the debt markets are getting cold feet. Oracle's capital spending is "running at something like **174% of its operating cash flow**," funded by borrowing. "Five of the largest hyperscalers are on pace to spend way more on CapEx through next year than they're going to generate in free cash flow." Tech bond issuance is coming soft, spreads widening across maturities, much of this year's supply "trading in the secondary market at worse yields than when it was first sold", and "**Nvidia's own credit default swaps… spiked to a record this month.**" Even the IMF and the Bank for International Settlements have "flagged it as a systemic risk." The macro capstone: the Fed held rates this week "despite an unusual three dissents from officials who wanted to hike", the first such split since 2016, and new chair Kevin Warsh said "the bond market is already doing the Fed's job." And a fresh demand tell: OpenAI "quietly cut prices on two of its models, trimming one by a fifth and slashing the other by roughly 80%," which the show reads as the end of the "token maxing" era of all-you-can-eat AI budgets.

**5. The bull rebuttal, and it's not a fluffy one.**
[The Compound and Friends, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhzg7aejXUpGltk9pv-2F3vns-2BiRpuky00hWHuhoMksAViFez3JnQXFntU4uPasKhrCmSESSepSOVGlCG9l0sAApyPuAj38autK5d4FcElFOTrA-3D-3DPzCG_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UkRlMRdVxcaVQDTBH8cKEEV8j1BFgkD7Of8Fa4bBFHgehJMrupsvVK3EG85dhUPGtxoEXSD2oHAonppNjLl-2BLDoJ72FK5akkKE6e4-2BUdt7J7c0kCRvmV67LTTUKzZtDbCA-3D-3D) (strategist Ed Yardeni) and [RiskReversal, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOitB2ZJ1AjbD4uM2isT-2BL-2BYJ5aFs-2BsPJdzft3A4te0HSUBTirnV-2Fv3zv1yB1KNVVHzwFMmo8I4wxRvUqErr6IewSDziS4hjRfkZZEM27L-2BoQA-3D-3D70iY_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UtYgDdhr-2F-2F-2FiH9tDFKNSk7EMFtuGyMXtasPUt0DpV7ENZ74Gi41F3kNsP3SuQOl91OErQR-2FDUbq2ApylpeM3TQeG5qhKhJyckgJ2z7W31HXI6eRnrvSVX20YQrQI7dzwgw-3D-3D) (Morgan Stanley CIO Mike Wilson).

Yardeni's case is the cleanest steel-man against the bears: "information technology is on sale," and the crucial difference from 1999 is that "it's earnings-led." His charts: multiple expansion of ~18% over three years versus ~250% into the dot-com peak; 85% of S&P 500 companies with rising forward earnings; an all-time high in the advance-decline line ("the impressive 493" outperforming the Magnificent Seven), versus a market that in 1999 was "just Cisco." He even points out the six-month forward P/E is *down 8%* while the index is *up 11%*, "the market has gotten cheaper on fabulous earnings." Crucially, he does *not* wave away the credit warning: Oracle CDS at a multi-year high is "not a very thrilling development," and "usually the debt markets see the problems before the stock market does." Mike Wilson's view rhymes: this is the third 30–40% semiconductor drawdown since ChatGPT launched, "another correction within a structural bull market… not the big one where it's like 1999, 2000." His read on Nvidia is the trade to note, it's "gushing cash" yet "the stock has gone nowhere for two years… because it's been a low-quality rally," and in a rotation to quality it "probably starts to outperform now." He puts the cycle at "97, 98" with "another couple of years" before the inevitable hangover, but warns rates headed toward 5% could still force a retest of the low-7,000s on the S&P.

## The debate

Steel-manning both sides of the ~$750–800-billion-in-2026 (and ~$1-trillion-plus-in-2027) AI capex thesis. Friday the fight was *is the demand circular?* This weekend it sharpened into something more corrosive: **are the reported profits real, or is accounting flattering a build that is quietly burning cash and deferring its bills?**

**Bull, earnings are genuinely leading, the leaders can fund it, and this is a real capex supercycle.** Yardeni is the anchor: this is not 1999 hope-ware; multiples have barely expanded while earnings have surged, breadth is the best on record, and chip-makers like Micron, SanDisk and Western Digital are printing money by selling out of scarce supply, not by financial engineering ([The Compound, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhzg7aejXUpGltk9pv-2F3vns-2BiRpuky00hWHuhoMksAViFez3JnQXFntU4uPasKhrCmSESSepSOVGlCG9l0sAApyPuAj38autK5d4FcElFOTrA-3D-3DpRZ4_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UqRFWEG3o74gH0QKdZiIJHdDtKErRKYrknsLjYyR2l9QChryBVkANGd0ugmfcNxt17NnB1Ycr-2FrYtGeuIrPwcTU5WGkG3nf3ejw9B0Tu97eohiZqKL-2FBWf-2BE6g5yP0VLiw-3D-3D)). Mike Wilson adds the cycle map: picks-and-shovels lead, adopters follow, and we're mid-innings ("97, 98") with the hangover years away, and the highest-quality names (hyperscalers, and now maybe Nvidia) are where to hide ([RiskReversal, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOitB2ZJ1AjbD4uM2isT-2BL-2BYJ5aFs-2BsPJdzft3A4te0HSUBTirnV-2Fv3zv1yB1KNVVHzwFMmo8I4wxRvUqErr6IewSDziS4hjRfkZZEM27L-2BoQA-3D-3D0aa-_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UrgZJFjsyUChz77QHaV-2F22xhjfGyxtkccecNLPRJyLUT31u9VN96vnWD5qPISMrFXmIlaQFDhO7aqxmQsJj7bVJQWGCCTl1KGkHG2C9cNm7OL8lvTvZL4aoteEZGxqWYEg-3D-3D)). **Bear, the profits are an accounting mirage, the depreciation bill is locked in, and credit is starting to flash.** The weekend's most damaging additions are quantitative, not rhetorical. Roughly 85–87% of Amazon's and Google's net-income growth is unrealized paper gains from marking up their own AI-lab stakes; Meta carries ~$420B of off-book, data-center-tied debt; and free cash flow is already negative or collapsing ([Deep Values, Aug 8](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOjty8WFfcz0S1rzbZ6qwcpYPbAGzilxp7HOe4biasL2G-2B4I0p6ZBPn-2Fj5VnMIjJGpqqZMRi9iX85JwnDy7xWeMT54xlSCd0868PSu-2FiEFPEEw-3D-3DpGyY_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UkNtwMSzhO7bb7QGWiKwc9yL65Cd5dQHxIt8sWa-2Bwq3PJLD76BdIjtR18lwoxjnTIDpd6VtPIVs4cUtAP0X1THcaF3nHexcscy9w7-2BjX3SZ5BHBGrKUcobp5AhVc0uVVSQ-3D-3D)). Rosenberg's macro frame is the one bulls should respect most: "the credit market will lead the ultimate rolling over of this AI trade… I don't think the Fed has to do anything," with capital being grossly misallocated, ~50% of business capex is now AI-related and growing ~18% real, while everything else (housing, non-residential construction) is contracting ([Excess Returns, Aug 8](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOjsh-2B8qFD26hA60o37IumOM30bTGVA5x5cR1p5P3N7t2rQPAGh3nZJHfO6OifJt6VPiOjW-2BbM15RY511Q-2FJcug4wPMVhl1lYqjWRYpLSZPAzA-3D-3D9ZOn_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UmnawW1hAUGLbboMykiYcvt4MfO6aYtGH-2B5-2FkYp63lZKauDPt8tVhV44Gkx7hS3ma9qHyzE2E9Hxg7-2BpKJ0jimiixZguVdVWHiCwWH1e-2FkHbWAZYrDwSvRD2ZU1YvEjaqg-3D-3D)). **The synthesis.** Notice that even the biggest bull, Yardeni, and the most measured strategist, Wilson, both point at the *same* early-warning gauge the bears do: the debt market. That is the useful signal from a noisy weekend. The bull and bear no longer disagree about the mechanics, paper gains, deferred depreciation, vendor financing, circular revenue all exist. They disagree about whether the underlying, third-party demand grows into the spend before the credit market forces discipline. As Wilson put it, the market will eventually "enforce discipline on these companies," pressuring the beneficiaries (semis) first, but "I just don't think that we're at that stage yet." Rosenberg thinks the credit tape is already turning. Both would tell you to watch spreads, not headlines.

**Sell signals to watch:**
 - **Operating margin, not net income.** Damodaran's tell: strip the unrealized gains out of net income and watch the *core operating margin*. The first quarter that visibly bends, as deferred depreciation converts from that ~$300B backlog, is the moment the flattered profits normalize.
 - **Nvidia and Oracle CDS, and the next tech bond deal.** Nvidia's own default-insurance cost at a record, Oracle spending 174% of its cash flow, tech bonds trading below issue, if spreads keep widening while issuance accelerates, the financing that underwrites the build gets more expensive in real time. This is the gauge both bulls and bears named.
 - **The capex-to-sales ratio rolling over.** Wilson flagged that this factor "turned down at the beginning of June." A hyperscaler explicitly *curtailing* forward capex (Zuckerberg easing off, à la 2022) would pressure the semis first, and confirm the discipline the bears are waiting for.
 - **Token pricing collapsing.** OpenAI just cut two models 20% and 80%. If "token maxing" really is over and price cuts accelerate faster than volume grows, the revenue side of the ROIC math erodes exactly where the bulls (>30% ROIC) are anchored.
 - **A forced-deleveraging encore.** July's Situational Awareness blow-up (long shovels, short chips) showed how fast a margin call can cascade. Another, bigger one, in the opaque ~$1.65-trillion private-credit stack, is the fastest route to an air pocket.

## Stocks in play

**NVDA.** *Bull:* the quality trade, Mike Wilson notes it's "gushing cash" yet the stock has "gone nowhere for two years" as a "low-quality rally," and should start to outperform as money rotates to quality; SpaceX's tripling compute-rental line is fresh demand ([RiskReversal, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOitB2ZJ1AjbD4uM2isT-2BL-2BYJ5aFs-2BsPJdzft3A4te0HSUBTirnV-2Fv3zv1yB1KNVVHzwFMmo8I4wxRvUqErr6IewSDziS4hjRfkZZEM27L-2BoQA-3D-3DtuiK_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1Uip3GMSNVUsMhQP1RgBZ8ec3Op94neAByn4ZZ3oUdgcKZ0yI7bzXNdQ8n0UgS9vEgTzbrzirE1LmE3R4AC9UCeY4S30U7HaguuYqxRX2WqXrhySSiHe4zWBJHyqYfTewJg-3D-3D); [All-In, Aug 8](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOikzxUxIn7DIPb-2BU6ntg4zoHjc-2BANCB6-2F3bU-2BAkIzT-2BmdO07mv8TFvmzOVrWvFLTgRQbJQwZJYGwrq6NT5WTAu7kEjmOJf-2BgRNN-2FrKKSc1uCA-3D-3DsCKr_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UogMXAtICJu00fU5eozTXPfyM7QzNIILV381LZP-2FaJyVxgUTpmzSe7wnUOGXtRUV-2BMNTlaaj1CEaNq6wVHMyEAMud9hS8dXt5-2FXilH-2Bf9oHBNYWXAaWlJqaqeC-2FS12L4ew-3D-3D)). *Bear:* it is the hub of the circularity, its own CDS "spiked to a record this month," and it keeps "backstopping their customers" (financing OpenAI, seeding neoclouds) to keep the chips selling ([Unf*cking The Republic, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOh5Z5A-2Bp0UcR9i6EiAFpOXRfQenFqu5WYXw-2BF377hExrc68Qmp2WKLxEmxUDFu55ij8E6R0oyv3a3ljbhh3w96NIrvkE6-2BNncm69p3U-2F44png-3D-3D704L_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1Uu-2B0k11qXKpfJtwVNS23-2FJFUEsl9FXo40RuonYGtKeQQxbKYfYxzkOWgZj-2FAAcIIxkqSmAzPDn0vM-2B-2F08pg8GdqJW-2FkpLz9fIMYM-2F8rQg5Lpr8HDZV9YWhWRZi2WbYME4Q-3D-3D)). *Next:* its late-August quarter, still the single demand read for the whole complex.

- **Power, the political brakes are on, and the near-term trade is who absorbs the cost.** The bipartisan data-center revolt hardened this weekend. Texas has "1,800 data center projects sitting in the grid queue right now, more than five times the state's peak electricity demand," New York developers are chasing power equal to a third of the whole state's annual use, and both governors have paused new approvals ([Open Circuit, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOit-2FS97S4vjsGeZOgSE-2FB8fC9lZkk-2F3Fsqck3btbxxRUrE4xByr4kRcVrTDdi5uaLTQh874dxHgBDFKKjR-2B24nGiOMyHabTPXguO2AlQ1oFkA-3D-3Doa9i_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UkwXtl44o-2FI2KF54V26Lv0niKYpImyVrusTErtcnAD-2F0HwA6HuVT-2FX6L5hOyLoolT4zMQOFd9pf-2FuxbTDpUD-2FCbxvNQl5bLhQpoI6j9W1kcKyJpbJ3Y9Q907QEMy2OkN2Q-3D-3D)). Two concrete, actionable developments: (1) Texas's "batch zero", the make-or-break queue reform where applicants had to file by August 7, has been "delayed now until after the election," pushing the real test of which projects survive into 2027; and (2) Virginia set a precedent that matters everywhere, with regulators allocating most of a transmission upgrade's cost to the *data-center tariff* rather than residents, cutting the household bite from ~$3/month to $0.94. The trade read: the bottleneck stays firm on-site power and the survivors of the queue audits, while the *cost-allocation* fight (data centers vs. ratepayers) becomes a live 2026-election variable that could slow the build, bullish scarcity for firm power, a headwind for anyone assuming frictionless permitting.

- **Memory, still the cleanest way to own the cycle, and the retail crowd knows it.** Two stock-picking shows piled into the recipients, and the operator data backs the direction even if the price targets are enthusiastic. SanDisk: management sees "NAND demand to exceed supply through at least 2026," with EPS estimates ballooning from $15–20 a year ago to ~$66.72 now and ~$200 by 2028, at a forward P/E near 8 ([The MoneyFlows Show, Aug 8](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOi21wApVO2wpAkkgtyz3texaqKKnSF5j9vaYJEnxpjjO5sg85h6xi-2BgbgIXAtSImdmPRXnZZNsb5yPbhhKSkxfl3JMa2MFyC5b1NfLxe78Xhg-3D-3D_TXV_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UhTB-2FB3LAnfG8SiXakpWg4Qs5oTZSB6LZFO3HgQmre6Pi7HWl-2F4xnidRvRi0vaYnCDkvs7AKilRlYa5Pbx9rAdwcbSW8U6yUBK-2By66kyBGzs2XhZmVhQI7SMuztCpawtJA-3D-3D)). Micron: demand growing "~200% a year" against ~20% capacity growth (a figure Elon echoed on the SpaceX call), ~5x forward earnings, ~$20B cash, negligible debt, with buybacks free to resume after December once a CHIPS Act provision lapses, one host's "$2,000 in a year" call ([The Finance Freaks, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhwL1s-2B7clzNqrmqrBKwlA8FCKYjbeyRJjgOKW-2BV-2Fv6axdpbUf0sAedajbB6P0mNYgKkoD6h8GjCxXUs0P-2BoyguNQU-2Fu5eX8rrg4fL4OYYmTQ-3D-3DXC3g_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UnpzcSoUYTO9qCR2-2Br-2FeAK2qfj-2BiHPvZlowZ7RFFtg2hOSMiBKge-2FcKoRel3HXEDTUbbGZ5j-2FO3iIKiqCI2vuJ6ND9T2YInNmK-2BfLkwCrEFt3ljjBOx71wgufjfWH0c6PQ-3D-3D)). Even Yardeni leaned on this: Western Digital just posted a $3.2B quarterly profit, up from $282M a year ago, because the memory makers are "selling out of their supply" and raising prices on every unit ([The Compound, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhzg7aejXUpGltk9pv-2F3vns-2BiRpuky00hWHuhoMksAViFez3JnQXFntU4uPasKhrCmSESSepSOVGlCG9l0sAApyPuAj38autK5d4FcElFOTrA-3D-3Dozis_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UoxOa1QYj4M49COllUH4yMZiJtsIIdSvgu-2FbfLbQ3ELpl6kJgWBwTopDFqtNMrS-2B9xPRJE3uIVLPflh4WCKhFFwMDVLKxpDR0pMPzPF2ebWp9BO9ez2KhPOSEBkv7t13SA-3D-3D)). The caveat that keeps this from being a layup: memory is a cycle, and today's pricing power invites tomorrow's supply.

- **Optics, the recipients bounced hard off the forced-liquidation lows.** Corning's optical-communications revenue is guided from ~$8.36B (2026) to $11.45B (2027) to $14.5B (2028); Coherent's EPS from $4.49 to ~$5.37/$7.62/$10.20 across 2026–28, after the stock round-tripped from ~$425 to a fire-sale ~$222 and back to ~$300 ([The MoneyFlows Show, Aug 8](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOi21wApVO2wpAkkgtyz3texaqKKnSF5j9vaYJEnxpjjO5sg85h6xi-2BgbgIXAtSImdmPRXnZZNsb5yPbhhKSkxfl3JMa2MFyC5b1NfLxe78Xhg-3D-3Dp1bd_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UqM9hImaBjFChH6VzeEtbGDG3nmPxIGs-2FbyE4klCrU77eOSpu2rsGx4NGpJedrYzrinm0UZKZe9850RhXOrq-2Fzpaf1xfQ7ObUiRacH-2Fl2IXvuaUCGn8NqSxxtb-2FxQxAYew-3D-3D)). The July blow-up (below) explains the dislocation; the demand curve explains the bounce.

- **Positioning, the July blow-up is the risk model to watch.** The forced liquidation of Leopold Ashenbrenner's Situational Awareness fund, ~$45B of exposure, long "shovels" (Micron, CoreWeave) and short "chips/software" (Nvidia, Broadcom, Oracle), down 67% in July, is why so many quality names cratered 30–40% and then V-shaped back ([Unf*cking The Republic, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOh5Z5A-2Bp0UcR9i6EiAFpOXRfQenFqu5WYXw-2BF377hExrc68Qmp2WKLxEmxUDFu55ij8E6R0oyv3a3ljbhh3w96NIrvkE6-2BNncm69p3U-2F44png-3D-3DRj2V_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1Uow9spJS00lcxpp3i5UiwDJl0sDVOxyLlaMzi-2FxtMkdtKK5hEb2E4ccGEjuBCwletQOkEG9yeN9PmBGDIHXa4mnyn2UIETRdSDkj85m6-2Bj2mAPB34-2FOspXvcX1xSS-2FHmhg-3D-3D); [The MoneyFlows Show, Aug 8](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOi21wApVO2wpAkkgtyz3texaqKKnSF5j9vaYJEnxpjjO5sg85h6xi-2BgbgIXAtSImdmPRXnZZNsb5yPbhhKSkxfl3JMa2MFyC5b1NfLxe78Xhg-3D-3Dbxwc_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UsuTqV9-2FDkapvcJ15HnUxk5eINdS7RsUUCC1YR1x4tWIaSTjhyVaiaDwxrm3l0SM-2FupWLU0QTPT07fRw4BExlV8ZGEISfiw8Ipt8rfaz4RBoY-2BlltweWr63vJ-2FKBxF6mHQ-3D-3D)). The actionable read: the swings in the group right now are as much about leverage and margin calls as fundamentals, and the ~$1.65T opaque private-credit stack behind the buildout is the next place a forced-deleveraging shock could originate ([RiskReversal, Aug 7](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOitB2ZJ1AjbD4uM2isT-2BL-2BYJ5aFs-2BsPJdzft3A4te0HSUBTirnV-2Fv3zv1yB1KNVVHzwFMmo8I4wxRvUqErr6IewSDziS4hjRfkZZEM27L-2BoQA-3D-3D3UVQ_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbXVFkiRpseesNqH0f9vE5cohMNspoVbRBSMdrY7UHe1UpRC9gakuYyvzZ4jCCEdU2-2BB6UK8uAA2ygbRLERIR11yPE7aKLCYaxevSKjFDIYB4qmmR-2Be1RtTGlhCfPozax9lb7twlZmvQ37B6Y6C3xE8yj2lZNKxFVpiYS5L8h3cQHQ-3D-3D)).

## What changed vs last issue

Last issue (Friday, Aug 7, "Nvidia now backstops $500B of OpenAI's bill.") was about whether the *demand* is real or circular, Nvidia's ~$500B of OpenAI guarantees, named sell-side concentration estimates, and Washington suppressing volatility to keep the build going. This weekend's sweep moved the argument from demand to **the reported profits themselves**, and, importantly, surfaced a serious bull rebuttal for the first time in a while.

- **From "is the demand circular?" to "are the profits even real?"** The new, heavier charge is accounting: ~85% (Amazon) / ~87% (Google) of net-income growth is unrealized paper gains on AI-lab stakes, Meta carries ~$420B of off-book debt, and, per Damodaran, "net income is now a deadly number." This is a level deeper than Friday's circular-revenue point.

- **The depreciation risk got quantified.** Friday listed "depreciation finally landing" as a sell signal. This issue has the number: a ~$300B gap between the top four hyperscalers' trailing capex (~$434B) and recorded depreciation (~$149B), with Google's Q2 at $44.9B vs. $7.1B, a bill that lands "whether the AI revenue materializes or not."

- **SpaceX's teaser became a full print.** Friday flagged SpaceX's all-Nvidia commitment and ~$8.6B of sales. This issue has the decoded first quarter: $7.8B revenue (+92% YoY), $2.6B AI-rental line (tripled QoQ), $18.4B capex (6x), a $100B ARR guide, the $1T ARR target pulled to 2030, shares -13% on the print / -30% since IPO, ~$1.4T valuation, plus the $920M/month, ~$30B Google-rents-from-SpaceX lease and its 90-day escape hatch.

- **A genuine bull rebuttal entered the record.** After a run of near-unanimous bearishness, Yardeni (earnings-led, 18% vs 250% multiple expansion, 85% of stocks with rising forward earnings, record breadth) and Mike Wilson ("structural bull market… not the big one," ~1997-98, Nvidia set to outperform on a quality rotation) pushed back hard, while still conceding the credit market is the gauge to watch.

- **Credit signals reinforced Friday's Oracle-CDS point.** New this weekend: Nvidia's own CDS "spiked to a record," Oracle spending 174% of operating cash flow, tech bonds trading below issue, and a rare three-dissent Fed (first since 2016) with Warsh saying "the bond market is doing the Fed's job." Rosenberg's framing, "the credit market will lead the ultimate rolling over of this AI trade", is the through-line.

- **A new demand-pricing tell:** OpenAI cut two models' prices by 20% and 80%, which the bears read as the end of the "token maxing" era of unmetered AI budgets, a direct threat to the >30% token ROIC the bulls cite.

- **Power sharpened from "a halt" to specifics.** Friday had Abbott's halt and the 900-GW-vs-90-GW framing. This issue adds that Texas's "batch zero" queue reform is delayed past the election, and that Virginia set a cost-causation precedent shifting transmission costs onto data-center tariffs (residential bite $3 → $0.94/month).

- **Fresh, concrete data points:** net-income paper-gain share **85%** (AMZN) / **87%** (GOOGL); Meta off-book debt **$420B**; FCF Meta **-91%**, AMZN/GOOGL negative; Apple AI capex **~$11B**; Google Q2 capex **$44.9B** vs depreciation **$7.1B**; top-4 hyperscaler gap **~$300B** ($434B vs $149B); Google-SpaceX lease **$920M/month**, **~$30B**, escape hatch after Dec 31, 2026; SpaceX Q2 rev **$7.8B** (+92% YoY, +67% QoQ), AI line **$2.6B**, capex **$18.4B** (6x), **$100B** ARR guide, $1T ARR pulled to **2030**, ~**$1.4T** valuation, ~**$50B**/GW build cost; Anthropic ARR **>$80B** (from $10B); Oracle capex **174%** of operating cash flow; Nvidia CDS **record**; Fed **3 hike dissents** (first since 2016); OpenAI model price cuts **-20%** and **-80%**; Texas queue **1,800 projects** (>5x peak demand); Virginia residential transmission cost **$3 → $0.94/month**; SanDisk EPS **~$66.72** (2026) → **~$200** (2028), fwd P/E **~8**; Micron demand **+200%/yr** vs capacity **+20%/yr**, ~**5x** fwd earnings; Corning optical revenue **$8.36B → $11.45B → $14.5B** (2026-28); Coherent EPS **$4.49 → $10.20** (to 2028); Western Digital quarterly profit **$3.2B** (from $282M); private credit stack **~$1.65T**.

- **Still open:** whether Nvidia's late-August quarter shows demand it isn't itself underwriting; whether operating margins bend as the depreciation backlog converts; whether the credit tape (Nvidia/Oracle CDS, tech bond spreads) keeps deteriorating; whether OpenAI/Anthropic price cuts accelerate; and whether the Texas queue audit and cost-causation fights stick after the election.

Next catalysts to watch: **Nvidia's late-August quarter** (the demand read for the whole complex, now shadowed by the accounting-illusion debate); the **next hyperscaler bond deal, plus Nvidia and Oracle CDS**, as the real-time financing gauge both bulls and bears named; **the first hyperscaler operating-margin print that visibly bends** on deferred depreciation; **OpenAI/Anthropic pricing and funding**; and the **Texas "batch zero" timeline** and any copycat cost-causation rulings after the election.
