Last issue, on Thursday, the big story was an announcement: Nvidia and six of Wall Street's largest money managers unveiling a plan to raise more than $500 billion to fund the AI build-out, with Nvidia's chips reframed as an "investable asset class." An announcement is a promise. This week we got something harder to argue with, and something harder to ignore.
The hard-to-argue-with part: the companies actually selling the picks and shovels reported earnings, and the numbers were enormous. CoreWeave's revenue doubled. Lumentum, which makes the lasers that move data inside data centers, is sold out through 2029. Nebius, a rival cloud provider, ran its own auction for computing capacity and the price came in 15% above anything it had ever charged. If you were worried demand was slowing, these prints said the opposite, loudly.
The hard-to-ignore part came from the other side of the ledger. For the first time in this cycle, a major bank turned the "chips as collateral" euphoria into an actual credit downgrade: Bank of America cut Broadcom not on its business, which is booming, but on who is going to pay for all the chips its customers ordered. In the same week, a veteran investor said out loud that Nvidia's 80% profit margins "have to come down," a financial historian catalogued $1.5 trillion of hyperscaler debt sitting off the balance sheet, and (the tell that this has fully gone mainstream) a startup showed up pitching retail investors on owning individual GPU servers like rental properties.
So the shape of Issue 016 is a split screen. The demand side roared. The credit side blinked. Both are true at once, and the gap between them is the whole game from here.
A note on plain English: a "hyperscaler" is one of the giant cloud companies (Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta). A "neocloud" is a newer, pure-play company that does almost nothing but rent out GPUs (CoreWeave, Nebius). "Custom silicon" or an "ASIC" is a chip a company designs for its own specific job instead of buying a general-purpose Nvidia GPU. I'll define the rest as we go.
TL;DR
- The credit market pushed back for the first time. Bank of America downgraded Broadcom on "XPU credit risk", worry about whether its customers can finance the roughly $370 billion of chips they've ordered, even as Broadcom guided to $56 billion of AI revenue next year, up 180%. The stock still fell ~5%. (Flag: my only source for this is an AI-generated podcast; verify independently.)
- Nvidia's margins are now openly questioned. Investor Vincent Daniel: the 80% gross margins at Nvidia and the memory makers "are unsustainable... they have to come down to 60 or 40." He frames the $500B financing deal as solving the capital question, not the return question.
- The earnings validated demand, spectacularly. CoreWeave: revenue +112%, a $104 billion backlog, and another $25 billion of contracts signed in the five weeks after the quarter closed. Lumentum sold out to 2029. Nebius's capacity auction cleared 15% above its old record price.
- Old chips are aging like fine wine, not milk. CoreWeave contracted 2020-vintage A100 GPUs all the way out to 2029 "at full freight." A Bank of America trading note quipped that "depreciation bears" are "getting defenestrated." This is the single most important data point for the whole financing thesis.
- Custom silicon came back from the dead. After a quiet Issue 015, the ASIC story returned hard: Google "leads the ASIC race" and is now selling full TPU rack systems; Amazon's in-house chip business is a ~$20 billion run-rate; and Nvidia's 80–90% share of AI accelerators is expected to get "pressured" in 2027.
- AMD finally gave us fresh numbers. AMD's own internal pilot cut its AI token bill 43% by routing work onto its MI350P chips, and its new Helios rack claims "up to 30% more tokens per dollar."
- "Chips as an asset class" is going down-market. A startup is pitching retail investors a 63% four-year return on owning GPU servers, and CME launched futures on H100/B200 rental prices. When the man on the street can buy the trade, note the moment.
- Thin this week: dedicated optics/photonics deep-dives, any Broadcom or Marvell operator interview, a fresh Nvidia roadmap voice, and TSMC packaging detail. More below.
The most important developments
1) The lead: the credit market blinked
Here is the cleanest new fact of the week. Broadcom, the company that designs the custom chips for Google, OpenAI and others, reported a genuinely great quarter. As relayed on Telltales' Weekend Update (Telltales, Aug 16):
- AI revenue guidance for 2026 of $56 billion, up 180%
- Quarterly revenue of ~$22 billion, up 48%
- AI-chip revenue alone of nearly $11 billion, up 143%
And the stock fell about 5% anyway. The show's framing is the point:
"Broadcom's problem isn't demand. It's who funds the customer. Bank of America didn't cut the revenue line. It cut the credit... [the analyst] put the financing requirement behind that chip build-out at $370 billion, and downgraded on XPU credit risk."
An "XPU" is the umbrella term for these custom accelerators. The argument: Broadcom's order book "is only as good as the balance sheet on the other end of it." That is a subtle but real escalation. Through Issue 015, the credit worry was a narrative on financing podcasts. This week it showed up as a rating action from a bulge-bracket bank, aimed squarely at custom silicon.
Important honesty flag: Telltales is produced entirely with AI tools: "both voices you're hearing are AI-generated." So treat the specific figures, and the analyst's name (transcribed as "Tom Kirkeruto," almost certainly a mis-hearing), as unverified until you see the actual Bank of America note. The event, a BofA Broadcom downgrade on customer-financing risk, is worth confirming on Monday; the numbers around it are AI-narrated.
The same week, the doubts widened from "who funds the customer" to "how good are Nvidia's own economics." Investor Vincent Daniel, on RiskReversal Pod (Aug 14), was blunt:
"The 80% margins that we're seeing at the memory names and at Nvidia are unsustainable. There's no way all of this is going to work if we're consistently overpaying for the various chips that are needed to do this in perpetuity... I think it's inevitable that 80% gross margins have to come down to 60 or 40. I just don't know the timing of it."
Daniel's read on why the $500 billion deal exists is worth keeping: it solves one of the two big bear worries (is there enough capital?) by tapping a "near-infinite" pool of wealthy investors who will accept "7, 8% per year" yields "a heck of a lot better than treasuries at 3 to 4%," with the asset managers "collecting a toll" of 50 to 100 basis points (a basis point is one-hundredth of a percent). What it does not solve is the second worry: will the money earn a decent return? On that, Daniel's base case is "at some point we will see a bust," even if this deal "prolongs the boom." His single watch-item is Nvidia's own CDS, the cost to insure its debt: "$40 to $75-80, that's nowhere... but if you start seeing triple digits, then you start getting really nervous."
Financial historian Robin Wigglesworth (author of A Fabulous Debt) added the structural version on Monetary Matters (Aug 16). His core objection is that hyperscalers are borrowing through opaque side-vehicles rather than plain bonds to keep the debt out of sight:
"The reason why they aren't doing that is because they want to maybe obscure how these companies have kind of gone from being lean, mean cash machines into being capex-hungry utilities... flexibility is probably a convenient excuse to hide that this is more about making them seem healthier than they really are."
On the bigger question (does Nvidia's pricing power last?) his answer is history's answer: "It tends to erode. There are so many examples of this... monopolist-like pricing power tends to not last very long." He's relaxed about the giants (Meta, Alphabet, Amazon "are probably OK") but flags the outliers: CoreWeave is "the king of debt... I've never seen a bigger gap between EBITDA and net income loss," and Oracle is "clearly the weakest of the litter."
If you want the single best explainer of the plumbing, Dave Vellante's Breaking Analysis (Aug 14) is it. Three things stand out:
- The backstop everyone panicked about is smaller and more optional than the headlines implied. Nvidia has the option to cover up to $125 billion (25%) of losses: "at NVIDIA's option. In other words, if the financier feels the deal is too risky, NVIDIA can absorb up to 25%... but if NVIDIA doesn't feel like the project is viable, it can walk."
- But that Nvidia has to offer a backstop at all is itself a tell: "It means the market maybe has not yet accepted the thesis without some credit enhancement."
- The deepest warning is about hidden concentration: "Financial diversification can sometimes hide economic concentration if every loan depends on the same demand assumptions and collateral values." Pooling a thousand GPU loans doesn't spread the risk if all thousand ultimately rely on the same handful of AI labs paying their bills.
Vellante's clincher: the strong resale values everyone is celebrating "are being seen during a period when supply remains constrained and rental pricing is unusually high. The real test comes after a capacity surplus cycle." In plain terms, a chip can still work and still fail to earn enough to cover its loan. "The functional life is not the same as the economic residual value."
Why it matters: the bull case for the entire $500 billion structure rests on one assumption: that a GPU holds its value for years. This week the demand data supported that (see below), but the credit market started charging for the risk that it won't hold forever.
2) The prints: demand roared
Set against the credit worry, the actual company results were about as strong as they could be.
CoreWeave: CEO Mike Intrator, live on Squawk on the Street (Aug 12):
- Revenue up 112%; backlog of $104 billion, roughly four times a year ago
- Another $25 billion of contracts in the five weeks since the quarter ended: "$25 billion is virtually the size of our backlog a year ago"
- 500 megawatts of power brought online; installed base now 1.5 gigawatts
- Operating margin ~5% this quarter, snapping back to the "low teens" by Q4
- Its managed-inference business (running AI models for customers, as opposed to renting raw chips) went "from a million dollars to a hundred million dollars of booked annual revenue... in one quarter," heading to $250 million by year-end
And the line that anchors the whole depreciation debate:
"Those older generations of GPUs are going to have a longer useful life than anyone anticipated. They are going to contract for a longer term and they are going to contract at a higher price... we contracted a 2020 vintage architecture all the way out to 2029 at full freight."
Intrator called Nvidia's financing platform "an affirmation... of the demand signals that everyone is beginning to see." He also flagged, honestly, the two things that could break it: community pushback against data centers, and the classic overbuild: "we always overbuild." His answer is that CoreWeave only builds against a signed contract "tied and mapped to both a data center and to a client." Worth noting the balance-sheet backdrop the hosts pressed on: ~$35 billion of debt raised, capex guided up to $39 billion, and no clear date for positive free cash flow.
Lumentum: CEO Michael Hurlston, in a CNBC exclusive on Squawk on the Street (Aug 12). Lumentum makes the high-power lasers and optical parts that move data at the speed of light inside data centers, and it broke the optics silence that had lasted through Issues 013–014:
- Raised next-quarter revenue guidance to a ~$1.25 billion midpoint: "more than a quarter ahead of the target we laid out" only months earlier
- "The demand signal that we're seeing from the hyperscalers is just incredible. So we see really no end in sight."
- Long-term, take-or-pay contracts (customer must pay whether or not they take the goods) "spanning out to 2029. We're effectively sold out through that capture period."
- Factory lead times are 2–3 years, "and we have visibility out that far that says at the end of that, we're still behind"
Hurlston's most reassuring point for optics bulls is that his business survives even a slowdown, because inside the data center wiring is shifting from copper to light regardless: "If the data center build-out slowed to a crawl, we'd still be just fine because you have the second effect where those copper connections are shifting to optics." He also flagged a possible U.S. rule limiting Chinese optical-transceiver imports: U.S. suppliers are "about a third of the transceivers," so "limiting 66% of the transceivers, if it's not done thoughtfully, would be a big problem." The stock is up more than 620% year-to-date.
Nebius, SuperMicro, Arista: the supporting cast, all strong:
- Nebius (relayed on Motley Fool (Aug 12) and The Rundown (Aug 15)): revenue up 454%; four cloud deals averaging more than $1 billion each; customers prepaying 50–60% of the cost upfront. Most striking, per Futurum Equities (Aug 14): Nebius ran its "first Blackwell capacity auction" and it "cleared around 15% above the highest Blackwell pricing Nebius had ever had": real, live price discovery showing scarcity, not glut. Short (3–6 month) contracts fetch ~$50 million per megawatt versus ~$25 million on longer deals.
- SuperMicro (relayed on Schwab Network (Aug 11)): guided current-quarter revenue of $14.5–15.5 billion and EPS of $1.01–1.10, well above the 76-cent estimate.
- Arista Networks (per Network Break (Aug 10)): Q2 revenue of $3.036 billion, up 38%, with Q3 guided to ~$3 billion, the networking layer of the build-out humming.
3) Custom silicon comes back from the dead
In Issue 015, custom silicon was negative space: nobody was talking about it. This week it roared back, and the framing was competitive threat to Nvidia. On Investing Experts (Aug 13):
"The top of the ASIC race is Google with their TPUs, not only that they use for their internal use and then rent out to others, but also that they're now, as of this quarter, selling full TPU rack systems... Amazon [is] a close second. And then Meta and Microsoft are really trying to catch up. OpenAI is working with Broadcom on their own ASIC. Anthropic has plans to work on its own ASIC."
The investment conclusion: "That makes us a lot more cautious on Nvidia... for the first time ever, Nvidia is going to have to share part of the AI accelerator market with ASICs", pressuring the current "80 to 90% market share" into 2027. The beneficiaries of multi-sourcing (hyperscalers deliberately not putting all their eggs in one basket): "Google went with Broadcom, then MediaTek, and then Marvell. And now we have new ASIC players entering the scene like Qualcomm." They also flagged ARM as the CPU winner for its low power draw.
The Amazon angle is concrete. On The Investor's Podcast (Aug 16), the hosts relayed CEO Andy Jassy's framing that Amazon "has literally built one of the largest chip businesses in the world in the last couple of years, and barely anyone has even noticed", a "$20 billion annual run rate... closer to 50 billion" if it sold chips externally. Their read: "few things are better and more important than building your own chips instead of paying Nvidia hundreds of billions."
Why it matters: the bull case for Nvidia is near-monopoly pricing. The bull case for the hyperscalers increasingly runs the other way: the cheaper their compute (via their own chips), the better their returns. Those two bull cases are now in direct tension, and this week the market started pricing it.
4) AMD, at last, with real numbers
Issue 015 had no fresh AMD operator color. This week AMD's own team put numbers on the table via a sponsored conversation on the AI Proving Ground podcast (Aug 12). Treat it as company-sourced, but the specifics are useful:
- AMD blew through its entire 2026 AI budget "in the first month," then routed lower-complexity internal work off frontier models onto its own Instinct MI350P GPUs. Result: "we improved our token bill by 43%," plus "a 2.9x improvement in faster responses", and "millions and millions of dollars" saved.
- The new MI455X in a Helios rack packs "72 of these GPUs clustered together" with 6th-Gen Venice EPYC CPUs and networking chips, claiming "up to 30% more tokens per dollar at the rack level."
- The macro tailwind: AMD cited a Goldman Sachs reference that "token consumption will increase 24-fold by 2030."
For context, The Morning Filter (Aug 10) noted AMD's server-CPU revenue grew 75% year-over-year, with the Helios rack shipping in Q4 and Morningstar rating the stock a Hold at $483 against a $530 fair value. This is the clearest "second source is real" signal for accelerators in a while: the whole ASIC/multi-source theme above is, at bottom, a bet that Nvidia's competition finally has product.
5) Memory: the bull and the cyclical-peak warning, in the same building
Memory chips (the fast storage that sits next to the processor) split the room this week.
The bull, courtesy of Wall Street veteran Leon Cooperman and Trivariate's Adam Parker on Squawk on the Street (Aug 14). Parker said he ran "10,000 simulations" of Micron's earnings:
"Consensus numbers are they're going to do about $300 billion in free cash flow over the next two years... I think this stock ends up probably doubling from here."
His bigger point is about duration: "Nobody really knew what AI was until Nvidia's first upward revision in May of 2023. We're three years, three months into that. It's probably a 10-year cycle... You want to sell stuff four years and nine months before the end? I don't." And crucially, he agrees with the bears on what ends it: "Ultimately, it'll be the inability of hyperscalers... to borrow money to spend at the rate that they currently are spending at", not a shortfall in demand.
The warning, from Investing Experts (Aug 13): memory is historically cyclical, and today's boom is priced on scarcity, not volume. Micron's DRAM sales grew 67% in a quarter, but that was almost all price (average selling price +62%), with bits shipped up just 2%. Chinese supplier CXMT is ramping toward 350,000 wafer starts a month by year-end (within striking distance of Micron), and price-tracker TrendForce sees DRAM contract prices decelerating to +13–18% this quarter from +53–63% last quarter. Their conclusion: when supply catches up, that 86% gross margin ("even higher than Nvidia at its peak") U-turns.
Both can be right: a great two years, then a cyclical top. As Futurum (Aug 14) put it, memory looks like "a 5-to-10-year constraint." (SK Hynix's $38 billion two-plant plan and the Samsung share reversal carry over from Issue 015; the SanDisk crash and high-bandwidth-flash story are a smaller sub-plot, per Chip Stock Investor (Aug 10).)
6) The tell: "chips as an asset class" goes down-market
If you want a single sign of how far the "GPUs are an investable asset" idea has traveled, it's this: a startup is now pitching retail investors on owning GPU servers the way they'd own an Airbnb. On The Rollup (Aug 14), the CEO of NPC Labs (behind the B3 platform) walked through a live model: put 30% down, finance the rest, and the pitch shows a "63%" four-year return with the machine paid off in "about two years, 25 months."
His demand color doubles as market intelligence:
"It's a complete sellout when it comes to Blackwells. You're lucky if you find more than 500 GPUs of Blackwells or an H200 node that's a thousand GPU count that's available right now."
And on residual value, the crux of everything above, he says older chips are, for now, defying gravity: "For the first time in PC parts, older generation pieces of hardware are actually appreciating or holding steady... the A100, the H100. Even some of your 3090s." He bakes in a "20% decline in the prices of hardware year on year" and calls it "conservative but also aggressive," with new Nvidia "Rubin" chips due "in the next 12 to 18 months." The roadmap, turning each server into a tokenized "RWA vault" with a "$1,000" minimum, is the part to watch nervously.
Pair that with CME Group and Silicon Data launching futures contracts on H100 and B200 rental prices (relayed on The TreppWire Podcast, Aug 14), and Wigglesworth's own musing that compute could become "some sort of tradable asset class", with the caveat, "just because something is an investable asset class doesn't mean people should be investing in it." When the trade is being packaged for the retail crowd and futures markets, it's late enough in the story to write it down.
7) The bill, itemized: what the hyperscalers actually committed
The spending numbers underneath all of this got starker.
- Alphabet (Google): AI purchase commitments jumped from $332 billion to $811 billion in a single quarter; full-year capex guided to $195–205 billion; the company said plainly this turns free cash flow negative (per Telltales, Aug 16, again, AI-narrated, verify). Berkshire Hathaway lifted its stake 83% to nearly 106 million shares (~$38 billion). The bull offset: Google Cloud's backlog is ~$500 billion, up 375%, though about 40% is Anthropic, a concentration risk (per The Investor's Podcast, Aug 16). Those hosts also modeled Google's operating margin falling from ~35% toward 20% by 2030 if capex reaches $300 billion.
- Meta: guiding to $130–145 billion of capex, with negative operating leverage this quarter (revenue +27%, earnings +9%). On The Synopsis (Aug 13), the hosts laid out that most of Meta's AI spend is aimed at non-core bets (a cloud service, a business-agent platform, a neocloud resale arm, a frontier model, personal agents), not ad targeting, which is why the market is more skeptical of Meta than of Amazon or Google. The ghost in the room: Reality Labs "on the order of over $100 billion... and they've yielded very little from that."
The through-line: the demand these accelerator suppliers are printing is real because the hyperscalers are spending unprecedented sums, and that spending is exactly what turns their own cash flow negative and pulls in the debt the credit skeptics are watching.
8) Power, still the quiet gate
Under-covered but unchanged: electricity is the binding constraint. On Cleaning Up (Aug 12), EPRI's Arshad Mansoor projected 100 gigawatts of new U.S. AI compute capacity by 2032, against a competing estimate of only ~34 gigawatts by 2030 (only 2.5 GW were added last year), constrained by grid connections, transformers, and, yes, GPUs and memory. As the Futurum hosts put it, the industry is learning to measure "revenue per megawatt" and "tokens per watt" because power is "the one fixed envelope."
The key debates, steel-manned
Is this a bubble? The strongest bear. On Big Technology (Aug 12), Paul Kedrosky's structural case carries over from Issue 015 and still bites: GPUs need wholesale replacement every 4–7 years (unlike a 20-year building), token prices have fallen 70–80% a year, and model convergence invites price wars. Ed Zitron's version on Thoughtful Money (Aug 11) is that the whole thing rests on two customers: he estimates 70–76% of Microsoft's revenue growth and ~48.5% of Amazon's depend on OpenAI and Anthropic continuing to spend. (Flag: those percentages are Zitron's own estimates, carried since Issues 013–015, not disclosed figures.)
Is this a bubble? The strongest bull. Adam Parker's "we're in the first or second inning of a 10-year cycle" is the cleanest bull frame this week, precisely because he concedes the bear's trigger (borrowing capacity) and still concludes the cycle runs for years. Tom Bilyeu's guests added that hyperscaler debt-to-value is only ~4% today versus ~30% at the dot-com peak: the giants can fund this from cash if they choose.
The synthesis both sides now share. Watch the credit, not the demand. Vincent Daniel, Dave Vellante, Adam Parker, Robin Wigglesworth and the bears all converged on the same instrument panel: Nvidia's and Oracle's CDS spreads, hyperscaler bond issuance, and whether the $500 billion actually gets funded. Daniel: "The bears were assuming this might not get funded... you see CDS spreads widen out on names like that, you start getting a little bit concerned." When bull and bear agree on what to watch, that's your dashboard.
The residual-value crux. The bull evidence (A100s to 2029 "at full freight," older fleets "sold out") is real but, as Vellante insists, "not yet a full-cycle stress test": it's happening in a shortage. The bear counter (Kedrosky's replacement cycle, the NPC Labs CEO's own 20%-a-year depreciation assumption) says the surplus cycle is coming. Nobody knows the timing. Everybody agrees it decides the trade.
Names in play
- Nvidia (NVDA): still the sun, but now with two clouds: margin sustainability (Daniel: 80% → "60 or 40") and rising ASIC competition. Watch its own CDS.
- Broadcom (AVGO): great numbers, downgraded on customer credit. The first name where the financing worry hit the rating. (BofA figures unverified, AI-narrated source.)
- Marvell (MRVL), MediaTek, Qualcomm (QCOM), ARM: the multi-source ASIC beneficiaries named this week.
- CoreWeave (CRWV): the demand hero and the credit villain in the same breath: $104B backlog, +$25B in five weeks, but "the king of debt."
- Nebius (NBIS): cleaner balance sheet, live price discovery via its capacity auction (+15%); "a mega-cap in the making," per the bulls.
- Lumentum (LITE): optics back on record; sold out to 2029; +620% YTD; a possible near-term winner from a Chinese-transceiver import rule.
- Arista (ANET), Credo (CRDO), Coherent (COHR): networking/optics supporting cast; Credo reports early September with triple-digit growth expected.
- Micron (MU): the bull/bear memory battleground: "$300B of free cash flow over two years" versus a China-driven cyclical top.
- AMD: finally with fresh numbers (43% token savings, Helios rack, +75% server CPU); the credible second source.
- Oracle (ORCL): flagged by Wigglesworth as "clearly the weakest of the litter."
- TSMC, Intel (INTC): packaging is the quiet bottleneck; Intel raised its equity offering to $20 billion and still needs an anchor foundry customer.
Read-throughs
- From optics to the whole stack: Lumentum being "sold out to 2029" and "still behind" after two-to-three-year factory lead times is a demand read that reaches past optics: it says the hyperscalers have committed hard, in writing (take-or-pay), far into the future.
- From CoreWeave's A100 to the $500B thesis: every residual-value bull argument in the financing deal traces back to used chips holding price. This week's prints (A100 to 2029) fed the bulls; the credit market's response says believe it, but price the tail.
- From Broadcom's downgrade to Nvidia: if the market starts fretting about who finances custom chips, that worry doesn't stay contained to Broadcom: it's the same customer-balance-sheet question that sits under Nvidia's own order book.
- From memory pricing to the cycle top: Micron's "price up 62%, volume up 2%" is the textbook late-cycle signature. If Chinese supply and TrendForce's decelerating contract prices play out, memory could be the first domino to wobble, and it's the most cyclical link in the chain.
- From CME futures and retail GPU-ownership to sentiment: the trade being securitized for futures desks and pitched to retail is, historically, a late-innings marker. Not a sell signal on its own, but a reason to trust the credit dashboard over the demand headlines.
What changed vs Issue 015

Thin or silent this week: no dedicated optics/co-packaged-optics technical deep-dive (only earnings recaps); no Broadcom or Marvell operator interview (Broadcom appears only through a sell-side note); no fresh Nvidia roadmap voice (Jensen Huang relayed, not on the record); and TSMC/CoWoS packaging got only a passing mention (Telltales "Sold Out Through 2028," Aug 14: a packaging bottleneck with Intel gaining ground, but no capacity numbers).
One date on the calendar dominates everything: Nvidia reports on Wednesday, August 26. Every debate above (margins, ASIC competition, residual values, the credit dashboard) gets its next real data point then.
