### Week of September 13, 2026: Copper's Monumental Shortage and November's Rare-Earth Cliff

---

Hi there,

This was a loud week in the world of rocks and dirt. A legendary mining investor went on a popular finance podcast and said something genuinely startling: to keep the world running the way it runs today, we'd need to dig up as much copper in the next 18 years as humanity has mined in all of recorded history. Meanwhile, a hard deadline is racing toward us, in November, China is set to switch its rare-earth export controls back on, and the people who understand this best are not optimistic that the West is ready. And down on the farm, diesel hit a fresh all-time record above $6 a gallon, squeezing growers who are already paying up for fertilizer.

Let's get into it. Everything below comes from a specific podcast, and every claim links back to the episode it came from so you can listen for yourself.

## TL;DR (the 60-second version)

- **Copper keeps setting records and the supply story is getting scarier, not calmer.** Mining financier Robert Friedland laid out the math on [Odd Lots](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiObdq6pPOyo4Dn9WpD8ts8BYHOOZRKpg-2F5pnv0JxNr1Uv8HHInRRVaHwMslZgDqI9jbcRw-2BXXagsXYRwxwB7IZkGJQL7AYraGHqotvh1b1vw-3D-3DB9Hm_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk99YFh06IhTF-2BPsQ2B-2FedKZ1ERm8yQ1M29JZsHJERaEJd8e98bk1DpT5oukVg2eQQvRtQTpkTg7AWjoJRSx5dD5zVVQDiABPY9-2BThgUoYv73gK4mKtbSlEzUA8xQGU3kWAQ-3D-3D): the world's biggest mine is running out of quality ore, global copper production is actually *falling* this year even as prices rise, and AI data centers are a brand-new, enormous drain on both copper and electricity.

- **A November deadline is the single biggest date on the critical-minerals calendar.** China's paused export restrictions on rare earths are scheduled to snap back on around **November 10**, and a former US diplomat now deep in the industry says the West's scramble to build alternatives is going too slowly to matter in time ([Why Should We Care About the Indo-Pacific?](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiRi9Y9dGOvg5W7ehLsbQKdMzAUAX-2FihISdD7oOAXA4fpKkYzt-2BXp1VyydWJh-2BrDgJ25oVQpy317CfDW4yJgcuO94UBUan1KHMwmAFWPwsp0Q-3D-3DMEOH_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk9-2FplYD8st-2BjbWWkvf-2BG0hGI91YxJTVn4A63SFl7Ob7KOApgNNi80aCWMmWZ7HVw3drcWQrw1S4HFiuAoS0B22ULHV-2BrpVG2SgltSMHd-2BxrV4KwTleluLzipXKPqkdWQjIg-3D-3D)).

- **Governments are now writing checks to build Western mines.** The UK put £71 million into restarting a tungsten mine in Devon ([Dig Deep](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiGvx7rCp-2BIe7W5L9caj9Qn8R0oi2NgWa7TDZ-2BEsPbQzADG3e8BXgB1uAePIz53f-2FOAXbup5qd6ggp7Bv9pJnDyvJ-2FOU-2FDjYuRwz3oirMRX3A-3D-3DsbN8_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk9wOClFLmanxECFtCaHa-2BMfZpRzDAopGMTVwZhknz78SRwGkGcZYR7IoQQ-2FmrRljgr6L8P9UhfkWjEpjyOPhF640LYX64PnLcS4SDBc8A0ZL3sfFdpUufx1-2FjIMBqOeXJ8g-3D-3D)), and a small rare-earth company says the US government's development bank has committed $50 million to its South African project ([Company Interviews](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiRVWxFH3JVKUi6m3mM29UyLHzbrEOSss-2FEJG-2FbsAK5LdY162nDuoG9RHVnqwvs5FRZaMv-2B-2FGHGJzyBe1NzyRvtVivdi-2Bgoo4MkAy64SnIVCA-3D-3DS7NL_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk90P1Q-2BDKFin4c1rShpMPrv7fXfqLDwFs-2FezrmS20oi7qCrw3jm8feGwJlgxOxTTp-2FWJLjcD1HP-2BdAEetfJdORoA7xNH6E9IeS0dOY3nX4YkC8xx-2BsdvOdj0xlUFSX4s9kQ-3D-3D)).

- **The farm-input squeeze got worse.** Diesel hit a record $5.94–$6.06 a gallon (up ~60–78% in a year), and fertilizer prices are still elevated after this year's Strait of Hormuz shutdown, while crop prices, though rallying, aren't rising fast enough to keep pace ([Farm Equipment Podcast](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOjsNKFFV2ItC9kJGU2F5Qr2TBGGdUPzuNNscq2Q1gr5OPwi6EBWoaUipYG1C4ucwHUYvX0tYx6ksMaWhqDKz8RXRmUF4B2h13qjd3N8O9Ea0g-3D-3DKHp__7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk92K5nTcmFLS9TuX-2FMECak1dY3UPN0VnwFtS6KY6vjOrQa-2F-2Bx7xpZc8OAenJi-2BpFlcErIxLF04oE5onlniXIszXEq-2FtgWV-2FUzRIXvTjT9SvxMdhN3CQFvSv5-2B1CN-2B0GKJYg-3D-3D), [Farm Food Facts](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiCijY72lPjg-2F-2Ba9LWK664wFmP-2BUBv4eeGBgtOSxPcgA-2B9yiRJVvlx0PDjGqd9wi3t43DfZwZWJNYHal-2B7HWUA06W4ckmk3qEGkGdXeUJQcHg-3D-3DOlUD_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk99TELMrb6DLz4FzReT9BQVCIIhciFv7qfywuBDat1guiHDxDqbRrxNjxSSiyDPpa0CVuXr9xIA9UYGVUIz3voWmIsqxYjGy6WyqHwp60pjlLxfamhQeHYvEwhPPBHtizsQ-3D-3D)).

- **Steel and aluminum were quiet on fundamentals** but noisy on politics: Canada slapped 15–50% retaliatory tariffs on US goods ([Bloomberg Daybreak](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhbw7VRmGYlPtlBH8M2IaJtUelsJu8aE3mIIYwNORUIHZD0b9r8F7tHhRn-2FSDcS96l9WkBNu6r7sB7O5Guedc83kEec73HWaDanLG22DZ5g1g-3D-3DIWqO_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk9-2BjZQuzbfc1QCLeqP8pPUtwPkXOzdluxvWIh6K5gXQIgdnZxyWU4N8cOVzBwQEjIGUUuA1yK7FhL3hRpOMmik2sVktsUYHfaPkSId-2FRg9g-2FXt-2FSHigeQbVozNYiQdzO7Rw-3D-3D)).

## What's new this week

### Copper: the "18 years" number everyone was talking about

The must-listen of the week was Robert Friedland, a well-known mining entrepreneur, on [Odd Lots](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiObdq6pPOyo4Dn9WpD8ts8BYHOOZRKpg-2F5pnv0JxNr1Uv8HHInRRVaHwMslZgDqI9jbcRw-2BXXagsXYRwxwB7IZkGJQL7AYraGHqotvh1b1vw-3D-3DY2Qz_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk952sTsHjylu5mFA5ORX9AvFifbbDQ0Yh41qJYBW-2Bgy1tluLhaCYJ0iV0Ud36-2BiVbcBkc27sVaNAf-2BH5xI5igCO79jHnra1Sf733K7alYixLiv56gvafR0C866DAmiOpU4Q-3D-3D) (Sept 12). Copper was trading near **$15,000 a metric ton** (that's roughly $6.80 a pound), around record levels. His central claim, in his own words:

> "We need to mine that same amount of copper that we mined in the last 10,000 years in the next 18 years."

And that's just to keep the global economy growing at 3% a year, *before* you add electric cars, solar, wind, or AI data centers. Why is that so hard? He walked through the world's largest copper mine, La Escondida in Chile, as the perfect example. When it was found a generation ago, the rock was close to **2% copper**. Today it's down to **0.8%**, and within two years it'll be **0.4%**. (Grade is just how much metal is in the rock, lower grade means you have to crush and process far more rock to get the same amount of copper.) The mine sits at 12,000 feet in a desert where "it hasn't rained in 30,000 years," so they built a **$4 billion** plant to remove salt from seawater and pump it uphill, burning **$1 million a day** of electricity to do it. The upshot: they're modeling **$10–12 billion** of investment just to keep production from falling. As Friedland put it, global copper production this year "is down, even though prices are up."

Then there's the new demand nobody planned for: AI. Friedland's memorable line, an ordinary Google search uses the power of a 100-watt bulb for about 12 seconds, but "when you do an AI search... you're using 30 times more electrical energy." He argued the tech giants building data centers are "borrowing money to pour concrete and steel, their heads are in the clouds, but their feet are of clay," because they can't find enough electricity or raw materials. He said miners like him are now being approached directly by Silicon Valley.

The supply math was echoed on [Saxo Market Call](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOg03LWX97PntLjFVMuwGX2P7pq0EVoswU4RKZMvqaAqgISRgd9sdN0QDzn4M3Hs-2F-2F-2BGLwTfa4dCUDDvHtfRy9dJM4h2ODsu3wtd4yNTiQtizw-3D-3DSL72_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk9wsEY-2B9jI6fWjkWoks46UPOOvyiL8qwpQj6h19m-2FE3nROSKW-2FnnCtaZEt-2F3VelVtDli-2FMIsDWU0qhFkVgg76mt5qHF5QdgJ7PnEJN03L5ag3HBtAv9S5x3eARNMo8q-2Bpfg-3D-3D) (Sept 9). Commodities strategist Ole Hansen pegged annual copper demand at about **23 million tons** (a ~$350 billion market), against a recent new-supply figure of only **12 million tons** over an unclear, long horizon. Producers in both the Democratic Republic of Congo and South America are reporting lower-than-expected output, while China is heading into its seasonal peak-demand period with fresh government stimulus. One oddity worth knowing: about **70% of the world's visible exchange-monitored copper stockpiles are now sitting in the US**, a record, even though the US uses only around 7% of the world's copper each year. That's because traders have been shipping copper to America ahead of a possible import tariff. On an earlier [Saxo episode](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOg8Ev7ruNMFFRKu0LCAi8u4e9VXx9Loj-2BZ2qvINAhIj1Nw9fXUOryEQFFaP2WjySUEijl2QdIgK98x2toG9tQ3U6Za3LJbdj8QYYu-2B9dEQTCg-3D-3DCZRv_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk9-2Fx7KSOa4J3QA3XdbUXkuRZWtoDPhIMq9OzkuMs3VBD20nrmKwmW-2BIMTM3Xdwz9VFXDv4C4ODy1KLvKOZNDVJ08SC1XnsbjQBVdqlYEJJGPvD1ufgWAWQBbMaIDif6oSmw-3D-3D) (Sept 7), Hansen summarized the bull case: new discoveries are "minuscule compared to the old days," a new mine takes 15–20 years to develop, and it will take "a tremendous price signal" to fix that.

On the numbers, copper is up roughly **47% over the last year** and about **18.6% year-to-date** per [Grain Markets and Other Stuff](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhmz0jsNl5j-2Fc8oXdn7oWyIolRlTbE6EDe5mE65pkDfp5H9WV9-2F945ZJ2KQBDUXYD4XEV1XD4E8TxM0l2XBnJrHTXFpgG512RblaY4pu18zFw-3D-3DNCca_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk98ALyhqVPL86XQSNbZHBjmi8aB4NLvYX00-2Bim2FhKErjCFtzSNWP7yeZ7od-2BhB8mssxva7BJhjXDm3Bm5pU6S5biDetsSASWq1cguVNzquwkh4rIvgWULxb0FZCegUeJyA-3D-3D) (Sept 9).

### Rare earths: a countdown to November 10

If copper is the slow-burn story, rare earths are the ticking clock. The clearest explainer of the week came from **Melissa Sanderson**, a 21-year US Foreign Service veteran, now co-chair of the Critical Minerals Institute and a board member of American Rare Earths, on [Why Should We Care About the Indo-Pacific?](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiRi9Y9dGOvg5W7ehLsbQKdMzAUAX-2FihISdD7oOAXA4fpKkYzt-2BXp1VyydWJh-2BrDgJ25oVQpy317CfDW4yJgcuO94UBUan1KHMwmAFWPwsp0Q-3D-3DTJfN_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk99DvJXewg064CtK5JXdeSjw8-2B-2BLhKT4pBj73mU2WyankuyBjac7zJOHwZ2oIzTtJyYSLpeg3GNw6OIbBJf1-2FHgRAEfsRbH-2FFw-2BVKJci-2FDDX5AJiezjf4ErdvyOaHCnvJ9g-3D-3D) (Sept 11).

Quick plain-English primer: "rare earths" are a group of 17 elements used to make the powerful magnets inside phones, cars, wind turbines, data centers, robots, and weapons. Sanderson says the ones that matter most are a "core four", **neodymium and praseodymium** (the light ones) and **dysprosium and terbium** (the heavy, genuinely rare ones), plus samarium, which is "red hot right now." China controls **up to 90%** of the processed output and most of the world's magnet-making. The market itself is small (maybe $100–200 billion), but she notes it underpins about **$6.3 trillion** of downstream industry.

Here's the deadline: China paused its export restrictions for a year, and that pause **ends around November 10**. All Beijing has to do is let the rules it already announced snap back into force. Her verdict on Western readiness was blunt. On the US approach of funding scattered processing plants, she said, "we are shotgunning resources", building processors we can't feed, because "no mine, no cell phone." The Pentagon's goal of an all-US-or-trusted-ally magnet supply chain was just pulled forward from 2030 to **2027**, which she called "virtually impossible... there's nowhere to pivot to." Australia's Lynas is the biggest non-China producer at roughly 20–25% of global supply and is rushing to build a new mine and processor, but that's "three to four years down the road, not three to four months." Her uncomfortable near-term conclusion: "we need to play nice with China."

This lines up with the mood on the ground. A veteran resources investor on [Money of Mine](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOib9rDU9Mx9O5KsqgCJ6F44R59WWStLjsqg2zzyhOxeUyLQUX7wH8TwFkRWs6wHmAAxm0E-2BskWcMeFfAZXj7yGDwLMyYQhmZjIOLT9sSnvdkg-3D-3DXsKs_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk9yly1XUP5209KdGqJkVJHVJlfARzlOwyNcu3coo2Seoy-2BF6CQBOPFC1-2BtzMJLYsk6ed3v1EKxn49aKhEXKmEhbZkNBpc8538LVsr-2B0TV34uSnCji3vWMyY1S2HdeWEjJag-3D-3D) (Sept 12) said he'd trimmed his antimony and tungsten holdings because they'd gotten "frothy," but stressed the structural case hasn't changed: "the West has got the message finally... we can't afford to be dependent on China."

### Governments are now funding mines directly

Two episodes showed what the West's response actually looks like in practice.

**Tungsten in England.** On [Dig Deep](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiGvx7rCp-2BIe7W5L9caj9Qn8R0oi2NgWa7TDZ-2BEsPbQzADG3e8BXgB1uAePIz53f-2FOAXbup5qd6ggp7Bv9pJnDyvJ-2FOU-2FDjYuRwz3oirMRX3A-3D-3DBy9T_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk9-2FfSWrajNovGHw1QQMPryraA5JkWnysam-2Bo6euSiiWQgyHGADjqyVq3RD8JriOnHS1EGtxnN7nR2ZJD0Pg9w8Sv9srO7DHjT5k0NiPj7-2F6GqAs6uo6slNxerkpHPWzHRaw-3D-3D) (Sept 10), Tungsten West CEO Geoff Court described restarting the Hemerdon mine near Plymouth, Devon, one of the world's largest tungsten deposits. Tungsten is an extremely hard metal used in cutting tools, defense, and nuclear applications, and **China makes about 80% of it**, and, tellingly, has gone from exporting the raw material to *importing* it as its own defense and industrial demand grows. The UK government just committed a **£71 million** package (£36 million of equity, £25 million of debt, and a £10 million backup line) and wants the right to buy **half the mine's output**. The mine is already producing again, Court noted they went from "fully funded to producing" in about a week, with the full new processing plant due by the first quarter of 2027. A key detail on why now: the tungsten price today is roughly **ten times** what it was when the mine last operated in 2015–2018.

**Rare earths from fertilizer waste.** On [Company Interviews](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiRVWxFH3JVKUi6m3mM29UyLHzbrEOSss-2FEJG-2FbsAK5LdY162nDuoG9RHVnqwvs5FRZaMv-2B-2FGHGJzyBe1NzyRvtVivdi-2Bgoo4MkAy64SnIVCA-3D-3DHUIN_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk9-2BN88HFJ6-2BCicI-2BgPhm3VLtTx5P7KtK0rvKim09ic8rQPUg4r-2Fl5MxxA-2Byoijty5EfJ1c4fGonVk5mj8FX2NMgBIUSmo-2Bzl7L1stf5p-2BtloU0oxFDkB7jlkT96K6j6R-2Biw-3D-3D) (Sept 10), Rainbow Rare Earths CEO George Bennett pitched an unusual approach: instead of digging a new mine, his company recovers rare earths from **phosphogypsum**, a waste pile left over from making fertilizer. Because the material sits above ground and needs no mining, he claims very high profit margins (an EBITDA margin of 70–75%) and low build costs (~$300–350 million per project, versus a billion-plus for conventional projects). He says its two projects, Palabora in South Africa and Uberaba in Brazil, would generate strong returns, and crucially that **TechMet owns ~12%** and the **US government's development finance arm has committed $50 million** that converts to equity when the project gets its final go-ahead next year. Binding sales agreements are expected in the next two to three months. (Worth remembering this is a CEO making the case for his own company, so treat the projections as the bullish view rather than settled fact.)

### Batteries: making lithium from oilfield wastewater

Battery metals were quiet this week except for one genuinely interesting idea. On the [Chemical Week](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOgZFTkfrzCFNCw-2BrVI0MNM2tJobbTOSbkIOfmDaYT3qOH4I-2BoFpCEfOkFXzUs55RkcGTvtqjsjJHxRljAdBq3BKu9Au4rBPSsZNErSR5WfxmA-3D-3DfFE3_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk964PwrosisOcvP9iwsWq26mSMoE8AB76VUW9XEzh6cTJiwmn21kI3JEAqT4DXSo75qI0CdlXo0i-2B1q2g52JI6PFzpf6L9qQAhfqvkyk92XZVxH4MwH8CM-2BjOhckZyOwWpw-3D-3D) podcast (Sept 8), Luis Valencia of startup Alkali Labs described engineering microbes to act like "microbial sponges" that soak up lithium from **produced water**, the very salty wastewater that comes up when you drill for oil, which drillers currently *pay* to dispose of. His striking claim: the Permian Basin alone could yield about **50,000 tons of lithium carbonate a year**, "more than enough to satisfy the US's current demand." The US produces about 60 million barrels of this wastewater every day. It's early, a field pilot is roughly two years away, and it's backed by BioMade, a Defense-Department-funded manufacturing group, squarely as a domestic-supply and national-security play.

### Steel & aluminum: politics, not fundamentals

There was little this week on steel or aluminum prices or company earnings. The story was trade politics: on [Bloomberg Daybreak](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhbw7VRmGYlPtlBH8M2IaJtUelsJu8aE3mIIYwNORUIHZD0b9r8F7tHhRn-2FSDcS96l9WkBNu6r7sB7O5Guedc83kEec73HWaDanLG22DZ5g1g-3D-3DYrla_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk9yOvAB2qBeIGu-2FySLcAAYRj9koxbTM9MxgquAlBmuMCDv1uzpbK6Hn0tJ-2BAh26DoWSK0KQiRIvlNKly-2B6veJimymUwGsjrfLYYJP-2FppyKO4Nyl9q6vHB5IXftXDHt0oayA-3D-3D) (Sept 8), Canada retaliated against US tariffs with its own **15–50% duties** on hundreds of American products, lifting its tax on many US steel items from 25% to 50%. Each side is now taxing about $20 billion of the other's goods, meaningful, but still small inside a roughly $1 trillion trade relationship, with "a lot of room to escalate." President Trump used a new legal authority (Section 338) after the Supreme Court reined in his earlier tariff powers, and floated boycotting Canadian planemaker Bombardier.

### Fertilizer & the farm squeeze: diesel breaks records

The broadest theme by episode count was the pressure on farmers, and it comes down to two costs: fuel and fertilizer.

On fuel, the [Farm Equipment Podcast](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOjsNKFFV2ItC9kJGU2F5Qr2TBGGdUPzuNNscq2Q1gr5OPwi6EBWoaUipYG1C4ucwHUYvX0tYx6ksMaWhqDKz8RXRmUF4B2h13qjd3N8O9Ea0g-3D-3DWi_3_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk97vglRC6MlWjI1QUtz2ZkS7M6Bt2Wa55U6Ih7ym5muzk-2FSjO1FunlBe-2FdqiKlWCXR6l232iG-2FOw3VPY-2BlfBSk2z1MAB6p-2B8FH7JcgDgrxlzuH5ug-2F64EzvTtxMoSWLICPg-3D-3D) (Sept 11) reported US average diesel hit a new all-time high of **$5.94 a gallon**, up **61% from a year ago**. By later in the week, [Grain Markets and Other Stuff](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOgHMh6vL3Fgj7gKfn-2FOhaGjKz9K-2Fk8HSpJSkOJcsHMxN9W28vYIKvyal-2BPjUUtzG0AtUAkVlGypYlmjWUu2S96-2BQAkNNPlsmarAWx-2BcMdczNw-3D-3D588S_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk9-2B3ChXrQ2t3dunjNuem1H-2B5nsLxhXQ-2BltXDjh1rAqDxal0rZa2wdqS70ugq0TDfC-2BVm7MRyRXk-2Foee4SMkMBxnxHZGyMCDRBCqI7DrH82Pg247U9q0QUynwCLcpalF3Dyg-3D-3D) (Sept 11) had it at **$6.06 nationally and $7.98 in California**, up 78% year-on-year. The government's own forecaster (the EIA) just raised its outlook, expecting diesel to average $5.07 this year and $4.40 in 2027, up from prior estimates, as tight global supplies keep inventories low, worsened by the Iran war and Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries. Why it matters for food and farming: as one analyst put it, diesel is "embedded in fertilizer delivery, grain hauling, livestock transportation, custom harvesting, and nearly every stage of agricultural logistics," so "farmers can pay twice", once at their own pump, and again through higher freight and supplier bills.

On fertilizer, the standout was Veronica Nye, chief economist at The Fertilizer Institute, on [Farm Food Facts](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiCijY72lPjg-2F-2Ba9LWK664wFmP-2BUBv4eeGBgtOSxPcgA-2B9yiRJVvlx0PDjGqd9wi3t43DfZwZWJNYHal-2B7HWUA06W4ckmk3qEGkGdXeUJQcHg-3D-3DFD2t_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk98N1OzD-2FS9U-2Bvlndsw7FKDxQMnkISlHpP9b-2FYHXKqw7FRh2xsGM16EKET-2B40vwEphDPZQaAI8iCP5NTML-2FjaafqsdYb5O580jcVMeqhD2Wg18KfhMBGAFcQwmXOckAL2uQ-3D-3D) (Sept 9). She explained that this year's closure of the **Strait of Hormuz** (a key shipping chokepoint) spiked prices for ammonia, urea, and phosphate right at spring planting time, the worst possible moment. Some numbers that make the vulnerability clear: about **10% of the world's ammonia and 30% of its urea** is traded across borders, and the US imports about **50% of its urea and 40% of its phosphate**. And you can't just build your way out quickly, a new ammonia plant takes 3–5 years, a phosphate mine 7 years (10+ in the US), and a potash mine about 10 years in the US. Her key insight on why this year hurts more than 2022: back then, crop prices were rising alongside input costs, so farmers could absorb it; this time, "it doesn't match", costs are up while crop prices remain low.

You can see that squeeze in real numbers. On the [Closing Market Report](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOj7Xrvnw1UJ3E8ziJsVr7bAbDq18Vl7Vynd5bxyCr0kxYfqe5pv-2BA4EO8ncVdcECKmuBfhX8tfiFexnDxDTUYAG-2BWv76IU8X0NNZpX6jnCJow-3D-3DF_-D_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk979nTJ9wxFzmj97KTu6mlnpbY8NZ8qvHvextftStIH2iSgU6OS8Olz2Hd2x1Q58lf6Z1lFhlY0scpwqEo5xjZlhjpnHvwGMoylZz0FXKm7xYwqACVYEmDZO-2FEivO5hmDEA-3D-3D) (Sept 10), a University of Illinois soil scientist noted phosphorus fertilizer running around **$900 a ton**, high enough that he's telling farmers to soil-test carefully and skip applications where the ground doesn't need it. And there's a striking policy contrast from [Grain Markets and Other Stuff](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhkXvOUzBqDnpRKsTuuVDe5YfwTuvFzek61ljgIJ3Iy-2FskqBp0EetkHcuJwxLffIV2JwP3HLmJ50kRuG1xQUpODTqftQuA-2FOKNzqfO2VVwlDQ-3D-3DQLNg_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk97JTUqwsR-2FZZyZpqnEDN6vVjMNQsnPy6m-2F2f2E8VALoBCExyjmjaGRUEFffWxALctw3X9nyBACbJ3jon64M97qm4oMuccOeiBIwP-2BPnd6Xgp3Q4z7XvkROlNHTlvjJWHgw-3D-3D) (Sept 8): France just allocated roughly **$1.2 billion** in aid to its struggling farmers, while promised US farm aid has gone quiet now that a grain-price rally has put some American farmers back in the black.

## The debate: is copper's run about to take a breather?

Not everyone thinks copper goes straight up from here, and the disagreement this week was really about *timing*, not the long-term story.

**The "much higher" camp.** Peter Schiff, on [his podcast](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOgQPUbqRUdct8t-2B4H4ypYdhGi7vmpDXn5jDj2-2B02CrEbGXHzKVKANGSN6THvJc2NuhxEf-2FKXoOZP0Mr0RNsQjBU5YqtRMfVj22lMZMPDTTe0g-3D-3DVQQH_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk96aONR97jODxNDGWeov81s4GGQ7ksIEyvCWKsoAc3ODMN5XoMpC1nZ7qhrnAKxcByi-2BoFnUxublJtbrupG7rwB1P8XTxcXE9IBIghWV9Xms9SX0Srb8CyY8Q2dAwrohzqA-3D-3D) (Sept 9), argued copper is *still cheap* despite being up nearly 60% since the start of the Trump administration. His reasoning is a currency argument: measured against gold (which he calls "real money") at around $4,400, copper would need to climb past **$11 a pound**, another ~60%, just to look normal. He expects the same for nickel, zinc, tungsten, and cobalt, driven by persistent government-created inflation. (Fun aside: he pointed out the US five-cent coin now contains about 7.76 cents of metal.)

**The "needs a rest" camp.** On [The KE Report](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiramUOUbqom-2BThwgRzMiBdNtFB4W-2BMudzJnSZko-2F90YJGTM-2Bp2GCpGMroQm1n7lzaRwWSfANCzwhUjwojEe6YdIZrEoBSCKcUpBOdNpy8NPw-3D-3DaiDc_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk948rzXrMbJDBI65DlmZqWZMLXb8EKLfsksP8mn-2B6yyPgBRUesjWQwg1vgPgzjop59mXKQnDmRpDoo-2BXdOhBEPVF5fwK0QBZIbPUf5cLIzvVjEe7J1lBwajpuVdFuRcZSXA-3D-3D) (Sept 12), chart analyst TG Watkins pointed out that copper made a new all-time high one day and then "got slammed" the next, falling from 5% above a key trend line to right on top of it in a single session. He sees momentum fading (each recent high came "with less and less energy") and a seasonally weak stretch ahead, so he'd expect copper to "cool off and consolidate for a while." He also flagged that copper *miners* (the ETF COPX) can fall even when the metal holds up, because they're stocks, and when markets get shaky and investors face margin calls, "if it's not nailed down, people will sell it."

**The bridge between them** came from resources investor David Finch on [Money of Mine](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOib9rDU9Mx9O5KsqgCJ6F44R59WWStLjsqg2zzyhOxeUyLQUX7wH8TwFkRWs6wHmAAxm0E-2BskWcMeFfAZXj7yGDwLMyYQhmZjIOLT9sSnvdkg-3D-3DDWWz_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk9x74XvJMxteJHgJnZ7snhfJpUuM7JFKrnjIb6UntdOXc4GKmXE9JMIOzvYdguTHAaF05gGkaqEqBxXNqnVd4bCZj8JC6sbEkYeQOdeiC2Bp8TDO-2BCeu7Atv8HF5-2BDlC44A-3D-3D) (Sept 12). He acknowledged the market is full of "hot air" right now, a single Reuters story about copper tariffs can move the price 5% in a day, but he keeps coming back to one fundamental: 2026 copper production may come in *below* 2025 "for the first time," and the major mines simply can't lift output even at these high prices. "That's a sign that there is a real supply problem in copper, a genuine supply problem."

So the debate boils down to: everyone agrees supply is genuinely tight for years to come; they disagree on whether the price needs to pull back and catch its breath first.

- **Watch the calendar, not the headlines.** Two dates matter more than the day-to-day noise: China's rare-earth export controls returning around **November 10**, and the possibility of a US-China "grand bargain" (chips for critical metals) when President Xi visits the US around **September 24**, floated by Friedland on [Odd Lots](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiObdq6pPOyo4Dn9WpD8ts8BYHOOZRKpg-2F5pnv0JxNr1Uv8HHInRRVaHwMslZgDqI9jbcRw-2BXXagsXYRwxwB7IZkGJQL7AYraGHqotvh1b1vw-3D-3DqXSg_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk90HuogLgSNMDZ4hErW3uhOsl2B5l78XNujduLEDo5C8D5UY7QMxOwvpDscvoG-2FZGMOb44Hhuzxna4537nx4xyeltq6NBLODvCke2MmojJ-2FZynX7Y-2Fp3IBgPSeEVqUoOQTg-3D-3D).

## What changed from last week

- **Rare earths went from background hum to front-page.** Last week there was no fresh China-quota hook; this week the **November 10 deadline** became the dominant critical-minerals story, with the clearest expert explainer we've heard on the topic ([Why Should We Care?](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiRi9Y9dGOvg5W7ehLsbQKdMzAUAX-2FihISdD7oOAXA4fpKkYzt-2BXp1VyydWJh-2BrDgJ25oVQpy317CfDW4yJgcuO94UBUan1KHMwmAFWPwsp0Q-3D-3DSSBP_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk91xaUY2G3D-2BbndSmWO5G90dEaGhSEk-2BHBHY5086lpSpxtyPUGemaI0-2FVkucTGDDijOtJ4lQ4t0pdiLw2fS5kHmz-2FW5SZExCt3AtaRSCyYACqjDPcHK2l39IruLdfsHSxnA-3D-3D)).

- **The copper debate added a "take a breather" voice.** Last week was almost all supercycle bull case; this week brought a credible technical argument that the metal is due for a consolidation ([The KE Report](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiramUOUbqom-2BThwgRzMiBdNtFB4W-2BMudzJnSZko-2F90YJGTM-2Bp2GCpGMroQm1n7lzaRwWSfANCzwhUjwojEe6YdIZrEoBSCKcUpBOdNpy8NPw-3D-3DS1PK_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk9wC1VNZHywHxh8yPCckwKrxDX5O4qfM4SC9zbHGsdFioWW5L1T-2BFNNj9zmEatOTDbg2xZec-2F6nHTjFHeGB3iBVo7lbejlpSAxLVx8qPuLx4f8JJuQk88USE-2FJYBxJD-2FTnQ-3D-3D)), even as the long-term supply story got *more* alarming, not less ([Odd Lots](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiObdq6pPOyo4Dn9WpD8ts8BYHOOZRKpg-2F5pnv0JxNr1Uv8HHInRRVaHwMslZgDqI9jbcRw-2BXXagsXYRwxwB7IZkGJQL7AYraGHqotvh1b1vw-3D-3DhkuX_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk98gCzh8lEXyKcu-2Bs9w2VbFR0IrZGDGCEwe5f30Xrx0i7a5yTzSlBDSS2uCli7K1WQScwHnx-2FtV0UkDZpPtS7tjS-2BpuwKZEdywGElmMKOL0Y5zIi94CevAf8yVOnGLhMpJw-3D-3D)).

- **The farm squeeze intensified.** Diesel pushed from record to record, crossing **$6 a gallon** nationally, a level not discussed last week, and the France-versus-US farm-aid contrast is a new wrinkle ([Grain Markets](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOgHMh6vL3Fgj7gKfn-2FOhaGjKz9K-2Fk8HSpJSkOJcsHMxN9W28vYIKvyal-2BPjUUtzG0AtUAkVlGypYlmjWUu2S96-2BQAkNNPlsmarAWx-2BcMdczNw-3D-3DDwm8_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVFgbzKtCdLfNC2h8TnMKAjCEVdoFbluIjNQvmySJVk9xF-2BqMxBS09N-2Fuw7lbiWSXejcyMMNSH60L9y6Ukt8SngZVi59DR-2FazJhDo6pmE0Xyk2ct1wCKUwhNkEOrH-2FDUQZDSOorposvLIMHX4aNYhGI6sVtHQlvuENqIzwtOTV-2Fjw-3D-3D)).

- **Still dark:** big copper M&A (the BHP / Teck / Anglo / Freeport deal chatter went quiet this week), and steel/aluminum company fundamentals remain absent from the podcast world, the only steel/aluminum content was trade politics.
