Obesity drugs dominated: Novo's Capital Markets Day underwhelmed and its stock fell 8%, Lilly CEO Dave Ricks said Lilly is capturing 7 of 10 new Medicare GLP-1 patients, and Viking's maintenance data revived talk of a monthly weight-loss shot.

## Weekly Pharma/Biotech Podcast Recap

### Week of September 27, 2026: Novo's Reset Disappoints as Lilly Wins Most of the New Medicare Obesity Market

---

*The week in one paragraph:* Obesity drugs dominated the podcasts again, but the story shifted. Novo's big investor day on Monday (Sept 21) disappointed, and its stock fell 8%. The next day, small-cap Viking Therapeutics posted data that got hosts talking about a once-a-month weight-loss shot. Meanwhile Lilly CEO Dave Ricks gave the first real numbers on Medicare's new obesity coverage: about 700,000 seniors started a GLP-1 since July 1, and Lilly won 7 of every 10. In Washington, Trump's FDA pick, 37-year-old Heidi Overton, had her Senate hearing. Hosts read her as a "stability" choice for an agency that has lost about 20% of its staff. From Shanghai, STAT's reporter described Chinese biotech as "basically a gold rush." And biotech hosts said the market feels more nervous than it did a few months ago, even with the XBI (the main small- and mid-cap biotech stock index) still up about 30% on the year.

## Dominant Themes

### Theme 1: Novo's Reset Falls Flat, and Investors Keep Backing Lilly

Four podcasts covered Novo's Capital Markets Day (an investor-day event where a company lays out its long-term plan), held in London on Monday, Sept 21.

- *The plan.* CEO Maziar Mike Doustdar set a target of *$23 billion in revenue by 2035* and five "multi-blockbusters" (drugs each selling well over $1 billion a year) on the market by 2030. Two of them are the next-generation weight-loss drugs cagrilintide and CagriSema. BioSpace's Annalee Armstrong noted Novo made about $20 billion last year, so the target is "not too much of a stretch." Investors "were really underwhelmed" because it was "pretty much like in line with what investors and analysts expected." The stock fell *8%* by the close ([BioSpace](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhgfNHLtpqay9Hj3axMY05UV1YNBAkuK1x-2FMPfQXWHGo6i9mQRZN6STiE3X0DnrxvPbpTZt3BJ-2B9UR75ELAaQ-2BNIfolu40VfBFhocoZY7rxfg-3D-3DvrnC_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19141uXN8QQnpjPEULvKMw6H07Kfj-2BgwKG-2BY2SDeCxZP-2FuUyWSKYtuU3Wr4nXmPrpeKG91iFImZm6dQYaMjyTVk8Hy-2FdKouPjhWZDr3tqiBgxvPrfpf6gNv-2FUB8aBDl1L6PjQ-3D-3D)).
- *Job cuts.* Novo said about 9,000 people left in last year's restructuring, and another *4,000* have left since, mostly through attrition. That makes about *13,000* total departures ([BioSpace](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhgfNHLtpqay9Hj3axMY05UV1YNBAkuK1x-2FMPfQXWHGo6i9mQRZN6STiE3X0DnrxvPbpTZt3BJ-2B9UR75ELAaQ-2BNIfolu40VfBFhocoZY7rxfg-3D-3DpaMZ_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt191418PrtuAphWyCeytiY-2FTFgRu2J11fQha6-2FkUOmM0QPUEPgpvFK2RbUQMwOSOLquetgcO9AOiZ3n5ZJuN-2FEPkIjWurX-2BCmUhoLkkBCzoq4arr0D3kPp-2FktoFnFmZ69g1uMQ-3D-3D)).
- *The pill is the bright spot.* Oral Wegovy (the pill version of Novo's weight-loss drug) launched in January. Doustdar called it probably "the most successful pharma launch that has ever happened," with about *1.5 million patients*. Novo plans to raise pill manufacturing capacity *tenfold by 2030*. That matters because the pill needs "an order of magnitude more semaglutide than the injectable," and peptides (protein-like molecules) are harder to make than Lilly's small-molecule pill, Foundayo. Doustdar's line to investors: "you don't have to worry about this anymore" ([BioSpace](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhgfNHLtpqay9Hj3axMY05UV1YNBAkuK1x-2FMPfQXWHGo6i9mQRZN6STiE3X0DnrxvPbpTZt3BJ-2B9UR75ELAaQ-2BNIfolu40VfBFhocoZY7rxfg-3D-3D_ytP_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914-2F0FMx5bQlqWqNKKIO1gFh5teewmSAf89DDL-2FOe8bKIVo6ENRyBRpvS-2BlHxvikT12fe3WXg0Lvh4h5ZBpZzljZZkPAOWc2YS-2FGcw3VC8K67w1ywvAMjrHDflDY2hos-2BkeQ-3D-3D)).
- *Deals.* Novo picked up three early-stage obesity molecules from Calliope, including a possible first-in-class peptide and two small molecules. It also signed a deal worth up to *$1.4 billion* with fellow Danish company Orbis Medicines on oral heart-and-metabolism drugs ([BioSpace](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhgfNHLtpqay9Hj3axMY05UV1YNBAkuK1x-2FMPfQXWHGo6i9mQRZN6STiE3X0DnrxvPbpTZt3BJ-2B9UR75ELAaQ-2BNIfolu40VfBFhocoZY7rxfg-3D-3DMn3w_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19142N-2B9R0wMAGwDmnB7rxxPsUBpusWLVfxWpRLdmKi2BaarpommM1PrFYkSvHFtWAfuRmcZdwEGa-2FQttSC7pM6VfhGj2jl2pcGO9qux6xB-2BxVTXwT4veZWONqAYFUi3-2Fl7tg-3D-3D)).
- *The scoreboard.* On The Rundown, the host noted that Novo stock is down *27%* over 12 months while Lilly is up more than *50%*. He also flagged that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, loses US patent protection in *2032* ([The Rundown](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhs3Oeb-2BihM5RYG9bKsfLBv8FcUZ9NnbStHhk9gbWFMnNgKgNEFiML1aKUCaxmtIXflJJW2C1kzNyahfksidmqa-2FU85cCdQAwzdkZ25k4m8Qw-3D-3D6zky_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19141kymPmdaPmSyvHkCacFVECQDbmIGKKN3J-2BRxEGaNb7ktmef-2BrSwvXpHkTwc-2FwPC-2FZ9c8uPwD3ZmokviwLrrRZpdI3sDAzMxbo-2B-2Fm8CQ1VWwBGoeSCXDes0zfUoLQ5nhKQ-3D-3D)). On Fast Money, a panelist pointed out that "75% of their revenues comes from one molecule" and that Novo's patent cliff (the point where patents expire and cheaper generics arrive) comes sooner than Lilly's ([CNBC's Fast Money, 9/21](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiub5qJFjr9VvOnK79hE15Uvy2mtKS6GTkXqfCmeRadt-2F75PipToH9UR87os6yWwwp1O4ZgTnVjvCGv6SaOvik-2B55p-2FRUfRO94PoNGXKYWZnA-3D-3DsHJq_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914-2BtF1tIDXrKQSbn-2FWgU2aU-2BpoYLYNkTH3dkGvbvcMex8khGapyhySphWp-2BT-2BVsT6UeLS83mF1OAbKo0A7q2OwdlzMGqkSNX23XJmANV-2FR0nZq8kRHye9jJfyWXkoNsoQNg-3D-3D)).

### Theme 2: Medicare Obesity Coverage Is Expanding the Market, and Lilly Is Winning Most of It

On the Halftime Report (Sept 21), Lilly CEO *Dave Ricks* gave the first detailed look at Medicare's new obesity-drug coverage, which began July 1 ([Halftime Report](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhnOw6Ci0pcy2AvoZmpeHnQbQ7GZsbPFwgFcVBRx0A7sB-2FFW8g-2FcgHx7qdVTBvyT8jeATyQZ39p5TP1mFARDn9WDJjS7lSQhAX4imaArzn6Og-3D-3DTaY6_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19145sM1kfgGwZY9F-2FEOfXfaSt3Mg90ApBG-2BxjPW1S-2FWqiuXaWpIrM6dGSOSzQ03AJhh2LQr3VbnaOcTSQnfx-2B6sN2XU98xHcULKHDJCNUDq5HBJ87MCKXUGkRM-2FwxSk5MO0A-3D-3D)):

- "There's about *700,000 new seniors* who've started on GLP-1 medicine just since July 1... It's very market expansionary... We're capturing about *7 out of 10* of those new patients."
- He said doctors still use the injectable Zepbound for patients with "the most body weight and the most complications." The pill Foundayo will play a bigger role for people who want convenience "but also maybe just need to lose 25, 30 pounds."
- Foundayo is winning "about one out of three new starts for orals," and "seniors seem to be interested in oral solutions." It has launched in four or five international markets, with "many more in the next six months."
- The next big market is diabetes. Ricks expects a US decision on Foundayo for type 2 diabetes "later this year." He said the oral diabetes market "is about the same size" as obesity. He cited "A1C control, more than two points" (A1C is a standard measure of long-term blood sugar) and "a cardiovascular benefit [that] seems to be emerging that's even beyond our expectations."
- He praised the government's rollout, too: "CMS probably isn't letters you think about when you think about efficiency and effectiveness. But they did a nice job."

Other podcasts showed the cost side of the boom. *Everybody's Business* covered employers dropping GLP-1 coverage. The drugs cost *$500–700 per month per employee*, roughly 1 in 10 Americans take them, and health premiums are up an average *6.7%*. That is pushing some workers toward cheaper compounded versions ([Everybody's Business](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOgwOawP-2FNMjr9ldTlPXcsbOI0-2BNAOTxVmJvCyNYi4fRyBkO9Y7o9lKHsWtXSfPKgny42hKTYkAwSBiX2QiUQZrB8hUy-2Bbg6szL9hQ4U8Qj8hA-3D-3DONZ1_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19148EcCIstlYK6w62C88u3U4zTJ9Hlv2LhwGomQlPzHaVMyOGnYUfcU3xx9ROcaxrigAt3H-2FlwdPFdk14ZIHxX-2BSacU8LtdPuTq-2FLBF1-2F1H9R3jYmXeOqHOKtzebJlWj6x6g-3D-3D)). *InvestTalk* estimated that by 2030, some *30 million* US users eating *5–10%* fewer calories would be a measurable drag on food-company sales. It also flagged employer plans cutting coverage as a margin risk for companies outside healthcare ([InvestTalk](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOi7INT5ipmuWKWf9upWlLp-2B2P-2B-2BHh-2B2UtqCnJ00fcuXLu4ucyP41jznKblkW4jBjPdjyxh5vrN3P3q0fMyKfvMaMjQM-2BgCqQiNCaUd446jnwQ-3D-3DFC9e_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19145JL23tmx00VS8eua0OSyBFxaLOFLUnQtM2cEtMPkHLNK-2BYNfIw9UfjndAtXV1g00EIc1RCHa2nmAR16PzsiztRxt2a1i1Kmi2CruCT6NAZH0oH5fHWayJmuJxVnW7D3Dg-3D-3D)). *The Gist Healthcare Podcast* reported a Washington Post finding: Lilly and Novo together paid about *$270 million* to roughly 250,000–270,000 prescribers over seven years. That is the largest network of paid prescribers among more than 400 drug categories studied ([The Gist Healthcare Podcast](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOjglmICA9oRCh6W-2FRCRJNxp1RCSEeT4m5BvL1fi-2Bo5arKsPdFNVmOrotKWE4MFp-2Ba6jIBsIslAMcikO2NOtL9j11vkvHvL5SRC64UztCdJH5g-3D-3DKYlq_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19143cpefCbBkjdpuEWIUZA7a9-2F5LDfomXyFLQ6lt-2FICDJnWBjncMrTeROWPkJss6oka7cyZ5891hheb4tfeQoh6JhAWeCw3lZCkpEQ4q1HHmTqbqEJG1hVrB-2FoCUbN50Acyw-3D-3D)).

### Theme 3: The Next Wave of Obesity Drugs, Including Monthly Dosing

- *Viking Therapeutics (VKTX)* reported maintenance data for its injectable drug VK2735 on Tuesday, Sept 22. VK2735 hits two gut-hormone targets (GLP-1 and GIP), like Lilly's tirzepatide. A maintenance study tests whether patients keep the weight off on lighter dosing. Results: *16–19%* weight loss at 20–21 weeks depending on dose. The 17.5 mg weekly group reached *22% by week 33* with "no clear plateau." Patients switched to every-other-week shots kept *up to 97%* of their lost weight over 12 weeks, and monthly patients kept *up to 90%* ([On The Pen GLP-1 News](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOif5vxJPTllbrSsPHk3rBIs-2FndaLb3JmxxAhL91HNvbesHMHFhrCiyGUH03UCnV8DwRcGHTVLg0MalZVFNvpiB4ISbeW2r8M-2FDKYjTHXuHXHA-3D-3DGLb3_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19148CCm0-2F6sAlHF269CU7AAmajec87qgaf7YZvhUJvmikS7I3sASqHCqR1YgtpHT7ftcak-2BhjhUf58HGRoEyH8BegHb-2F-2BTeeWXKZMmmyzZPnaThCwYnaSectAFix7ijveeig-3D-3D)). BioSpace said Truist called it their "best case scenario," and William Blair called it a "maintenance trifecta." Stomach-related side effects were about the same as placebo during the 12-week maintenance period ([BioSpace](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhgfNHLtpqay9Hj3axMY05UV1YNBAkuK1x-2FMPfQXWHGo6i9mQRZN6STiE3X0DnrxvPbpTZt3BJ-2B9UR75ELAaQ-2BNIfolu40VfBFhocoZY7rxfg-3D-3DdX3v_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19144QprOtkXgOJpA6Gu6dtpYlVYqW8r4QoX4UH3eRz9IgZVDgsmVl-2BrpUonRlNhxzvJDxu1rF4ylVS3BJU6y6zUPcssmWe-2Bf37-2BwZnhk6ikdTzvtp3s27-2FOIIe32tnc-2BIKLg-3D-3D)). - *Roche's CT-388* (now carrying a new generic name, from its *$2.7 billion* purchase of Carmot Therapeutics in 2023) is another weekly GLP-1/GIP drug. In a 48-week phase 2 study in type 2 diabetes, the top 24 mg dose cut A1C by an average *2.65 points* from a starting point of 8.1. In patients who started above 8.5, the cut was *4.13 points*. By week 48, *90%* of the 24 mg group had reached an A1C of 6.5 or lower, and *62%* were below 5.7, which is normal blood sugar ([On The Pen GLP-1 News](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOif5vxJPTllbrSsPHk3rBIs-2FndaLb3JmxxAhL91HNvbesHMHFhrCiyGUH03UCnV8DwRcGHTVLg0MalZVFNvpiB4ISbeW2r8M-2FDKYjTHXuHXHA-3D-3Dzphy_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19149d-2F-2BD7tX-2BnGvM-2Fc6PPLRkNKU0603-2FBKJEYoGcDWrpZXxuXX5SChPM8uB9FKF0X2bja2Wdl5n40VtwAQtjEJUo-2BYraRimPE4IGJkpCxDsAiq1Aus6r2dU8dVO54-2FONyYjg-3D-3D); [BioSpace](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhgfNHLtpqay9Hj3axMY05UV1YNBAkuK1x-2FMPfQXWHGo6i9mQRZN6STiE3X0DnrxvPbpTZt3BJ-2B9UR75ELAaQ-2BNIfolu40VfBFhocoZY7rxfg-3D-3D45sB_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19144wESfZf23dCrIzPBRzFawUHAmhwshROflXNQ9jQ3-2BjcgJaDqYNbhtfw9dKiYnMdMJ8JbtlupJHmHNPryPCl9EHTgjV8q-2FaZneT98iYZ3nN4fyNZyqIToCsWpdNuWMNNiQ-3D-3D)).
- *Moonwalk Biosciences* raised an oversubscribed *$70 million Series B* for an siRNA drug (a type of gene-silencing medicine) that targets fat tissue rather than appetite. ### Theme 4: The FDA Gets a Nominee and Starts Cracking Down on Compounded GLP-1s

- *Who is Heidi Overton?* On The Readout Loud, STAT's new FDA reporter Margaret Manto described her as a 37-year-old preventive-medicine doctor. If confirmed, she would be the youngest FDA commissioner ever. She is a "conservative's conservative" from the first Trump administration and a MAHA ally (MAHA is RFK Jr.'s "Make America Healthy Again" movement). Some in that movement see her as "an obstructionist," for example for toning down the White House language on psychedelics ([The Readout Loud](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhCoOoeWLi83mY9iZ-2BEtc2-2B-2B637v47CKoX8GkK0Cju8biXS25CMiOYe1PLc1LWXx2ezyjcI7dgc6CPGwDw27FCH-2FD5OeZncCz1A1gbqMyZapQ-3D-3DX9Zw_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt191460LcC1eadeBv937kpyeTiuOjRSLg4YOjFQNOn6-2Fhlm9rXP0LNqjYZIftlg5cBpHAZcBxZDybzaf93Ti4-2BDelQb1cjW7JP2QBiphQocweECOMleOBN8dNbk4b0Y-2F6E-2BKjQ-3D-3D)).
- *The agency she'd inherit.* The FDA "lost around 20% of its total workforce. It's down to about 16,000 from a high of 20,000." Former commissioner Marty Makary and former biologics chief Vinay Prasad were both "seen as politicizing agency decisions." Prasad "left and then came back and then left again." New heads of the FDA's drug center (CDER) and biologics center (CBER) are "seen as more stable and scientifically minded." Manto's read on why Overton was picked: "Stability, I think, is the main thing" ([The Readout Loud](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhCoOoeWLi83mY9iZ-2BEtc2-2B-2B637v47CKoX8GkK0Cju8biXS25CMiOYe1PLc1LWXx2ezyjcI7dgc6CPGwDw27FCH-2FD5OeZncCz1A1gbqMyZapQ-3D-3Dpz3N_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914-2FwaepjVy-2FQejOcitmfgowDfnAw-2BEbHooxTrPU2A1wcn2qJ0OmpeEgX-2BRLZg5qqc8HJQX6F7cQ7GbYIbqkCAIDTRQ3IKe281UP6qKsYQobGnj1daN9uSKDpwC-2BtJ-2BAeeag-3D-3D)).
- *The hearing (Sept 25).* On the Pink Sheet's Drug Fix, reporters said Overton "came in very prepared" and "acquitted herself much better" than CDC nominee Erica Schwartz had. She called the MMR vaccine "not lethal" while still defending the president. She declined to say whether mifepristone (the abortion pill) is safe beyond "FDA has found it to be safe and effective." She said the White House sets priorities, but decisions on specific products should be left to career staff. Reporters noticed what senators skipped: OTC policy, drug advertising, and AI regulation ([Citeline Podcasts](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOgivYYwPpE0UVtw8jhoUzIugt6QBUfYsxpqaZOnC2qS6lbQBIcCW-2BbtWuGIZOs4UNPrg6ksy41yo4nz0aBXKodiileWtM-2BG5kgZUjhp7C0ROA-3D-3Dejbs_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19145Vkxkwj00H-2FTbedWJJB3BRydErIefczuXZAJsl6S30PgRLlRBjA01wr8PLmY9XTk3zG45Kcp-2BZtHMxAA-2BdJ5hOC1mYyrLnNeim6xyU0-2BzxIpehS-2BEMRP750wyqtRNSbog-3D-3D)).
- *Where she could act first.* Manto said "the issue that will be most likely to see real action on from her is mifepristone and telehealth abortion access," and "industry leaders are concerned about" it ([The Readout Loud](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhCoOoeWLi83mY9iZ-2BEtc2-2B-2B637v47CKoX8GkK0Cju8biXS25CMiOYe1PLc1LWXx2ezyjcI7dgc6CPGwDw27FCH-2FD5OeZncCz1A1gbqMyZapQ-3D-3DClMc_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914xyWa8QDmMmY5XoeZXMDIJQFAazSiS-2B4IRDo5Ptsir8WQgcYSBBn9-2F02BQmY274r8z05S9YIKTPTCw3BSK50HemEKbOMx0pIhEVHwmV-2B68hSdvJdj-2B6S1AsUJ6PayRW-2BpQ-3D-3D)).
- *Compounding crackdown.* Compounded drugs are custom versions mixed by pharmacies. The FDA sent a warning letter to *Empower Pharmacy*, one of the largest US compounders, over mass-produced GLP-1 mixes such as tirzepatide with niacinamide and semaglutide with B12. The FDA's position: adding a vitamin does not turn a copy of a brand-name drug into a custom, patient-specific product. Host Dave Knapp: "you can't just add B12 to tirzepatide and mass produce it." He noted a warning letter "is not going after them," but "this is the next step in the escalation" ([On The Pen GLP-1 News](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOif5vxJPTllbrSsPHk3rBIs-2FndaLb3JmxxAhL91HNvbesHMHFhrCiyGUH03UCnV8DwRcGHTVLg0MalZVFNvpiB4ISbeW2r8M-2FDKYjTHXuHXHA-3D-3DeCa6_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19142Zzpjziui5EMzAYRunkDzlb-2BlEhzodcQ1FMTtW92nKEj8SQSwaeGQshkUjLDYSQ2nQp9hIqqUBZEpewnpZwRxgOhfZtBAAXx1JQe5YEs09wPMwRiyLY0A1nLzYiTK3WWw-3D-3D)).
- *Retatrutide lawsuit.* Lilly is suing the FDA to get retatrutide, its next-generation obesity drug, classified as a biologic. That label would block compounding and give Lilly longer exclusivity (the period before copies are allowed). On Sept 21, the Justice Department sent the court a letter pointing to a recent Seventh Circuit case (Franco v. Chobani) about how much weight judges should give FDA scientific interpretations. Oral arguments were set for *Sept 24* ([On The Pen GLP-1 News](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOif5vxJPTllbrSsPHk3rBIs-2FndaLb3JmxxAhL91HNvbesHMHFhrCiyGUH03UCnV8DwRcGHTVLg0MalZVFNvpiB4ISbeW2r8M-2FDKYjTHXuHXHA-3D-3D5m6i_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914370FgQ9BOWZRcOLLOmTK-2BVOE-2Bssglj7okFdRrxKAS1RWHJmpBx25qucqUuXyXuDbJLK5hb2-2FJK7-2BpQE2Wx1uSWweavS7CsnRGgkGSkowMFvNq2uLhshXVatR-2B9VTnRcHQ-3D-3D)).
- *MAHA Summit.* BioCentury flagged the annual MAHA Summit in Washington on *Sept 29*. It includes an "FDA reform" session with Acting Commissioner Kyle Diamantas and White House adviser Calley Means, who "calls [drug companies] corrupt" and "says that they've captured the FDA." There is also a psychedelics session. Compass Pathways is a financial sponsor of the summit ([BioCentury This Week](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhbfiaYa6u5v5gXg-2FnJN-2B2yO7hW6Ov7J1V-2BcmcC0hNvuMtNa8KxE8Qt1oSIAr1N4BcVGadSZv1HZZrCEaHGl2x2W7zzFepObyJCRqQPa0hfDQ-3D-3DHVAi_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914-2B73LGBoBxoqUYT9M1TiiepMJF29ELByksOGY4RGqZvpKp9I5yEyKfWz45sQQI9-2FMP25ZC1DSpH4okdt8vmyFXc7lTEeXp2t8Flh4U110OKHZuFKLBrlw-2BortWLTx7BZtA-3D-3D)).

### Theme 5: China Is Now a Biotech Powerhouse

- "Approximately *one-third* of the world's drug development pipeline is now coming from China." Pfizer, Merck, AstraZeneca, Lilly and others have spent about *$50 billion* to buy or license Chinese-discovered medicines.
- A Chinese biotech CEO told him: "U.S. companies cannot compete. We are too fast. We are too efficient."
- *A deal structure to watch.* Chinese biotechs license their molecules to a new company set up mostly by US investors, in exchange for equity. The point is that a non-Chinese company "is easier to then sell to a U.S. pharma company."
- *Risks.* Three patient deaths in Chinese gene-therapy trials all came from "investigator-initiated trials." These are early studies that skip full central sign-off from China's regulator (the NMPA). China has since added controls. Still, "the competition for molecules here is as high as it's ever been... It's basically a gold rush out here." One investor called geopolitics "the 100-pound gorilla in the room."
- On Biotech Hangout, a host said today's fast-follower world means a Vertex-style decade of quiet work in one disease "wouldn't happen today... with China and other fast followers, almost immediately upon the first signs of success, you'd have 2, 3, 4 competitors" ([Biotech Hangout, Ep. 196](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhGRBdmKrqdaMax0gny3jmGEdhJWMfX9qMmHl0FJShBtHiIbLu8Ueq4t-2Fb-2FNLSyXvcZuM3YUnee-2FHekfTmnt0JUZ0fag5CkHEwegdjr4X29Ww-3D-3DSAvU_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19146kO134n-2B6V837HgC6MT2mha6XrE-2BdGknW5sipCyev2AYfuUh4-2BPpi3nJ3zQH-2FjQ6-2BT9RHQrIdEIa0DbBXRjxJA1w6hdfie8jkrR1uRBSq2-2BLK-2BeTc5Q88gSxk4W3-2BTjeg-3D-3D)).

### Theme 6: Biotech Markets Are Nervous, but the IPO Window Is Still Open

- *Mood check.* Biotech Hangout Ep. 196 was recorded Sept 18 and posted Sept 25. Hosts said "the XBI is still up about 30% on the year," but buy-side investors complain "the wrong stocks are working": gene editing, "the Modernas of the world," heavily shorted names like Summit. Meanwhile "the good names are languishing." One host said it "feels just as much psychological as anything," driven by rising rates, several high-profile trial failures and a quiet stretch for M&A. Another said the setback for Novartis' del-brax after its large Avidity acquisition is "putting a chill" on big deals for drugs that haven't been fully proven. Another warned that as midterms approach, "it just takes one tweet to roll the sector over" on drug pricing. The flip side: "all it will take is one... big M&A deal to kind of get people excited again." Hosts also said Abivax "causes everybody to have major agita," because so much attention rides on whether it gets bought ([Biotech Hangout, Ep. 196](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhGRBdmKrqdaMax0gny3jmGEdhJWMfX9qMmHl0FJShBtHiIbLu8Ueq4t-2Fb-2FNLSyXvcZuM3YUnee-2FHekfTmnt0JUZ0fag5CkHEwegdjr4X29Ww-3D-3DxqXg_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt191458h7M8tuT82I9jjcDPayI9-2BL11uKEEgLGBMC2QftEw5WsjD1Dms-2Ft6hal22Ynr3JO2ie-2BrcJKOFvdX8lVm-2FNUvac5A39Cup8X9y06QaMo-2FUpn7NvcVhqs7GT3xd9KNFQg-3D-3D)).
- *IPOs.* Elektra Pharma upsized its IPO (stock market debut) to *$350 million*, priced at the midpoint, then fell *12%* on its first day. That broke a streak BioCentury had tracked: 18 of 21 biotech IPOs this year were trading above their offer price, and nine in a row had gained on day one. Paul Bonanos suggested some investors lumped Elektra's approach (SIRP proteins) in with the failed CD47 drugs. Adarex Pharma, an siRNA company, set terms for a similar ~$350 million deal ([BioCentury This Week](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhbfiaYa6u5v5gXg-2FnJN-2B2yO7hW6Ov7J1V-2BcmcC0hNvuMtNa8KxE8Qt1oSIAr1N4BcVGadSZv1HZZrCEaHGl2x2W7zzFepObyJCRqQPa0hfDQ-3D-3Daw-e_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19140S-2F1CwpmsRXF4vVN-2F-2BcIt2SOPo8FY3y8UnGmee80ISSBL6ffZIS-2BNSD3woKQTUVtL7dlGh866X4VLCjy5HmXtKQ11OFflLsCPWOl5C7ldBMKasn5SFRk-2FUPPjxkz3WxTw-3D-3D)). Morning Call noted Iambic Therapeutics, Retention Pharma and T-Rex Bio have filed to go public. It also said this year's five best-performing IPOs were all biotech ([Morning Call](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhKiBezUe17wSl9KMeXEPyUGw-2FVqh3cvS1ZQTEc-2BXbV0kMr6ddyd773tXrVg9R7qaAtF8PfNrmorySu8j-2FJ2iYR74S2iaVXa8CcT6GkONvWDw-3D-3Dd70k_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914-2FvU8EGFQ5KtvY3SKpQ0QDtys6uc0RXq86vlBaLSCdR2Ujzp4GDFaBUk8ny-2FkKSUB3cDyVhSX49n0I9oKz9gCKo9Pkb87-2FSCTRouTyB9cqVg1wTjUhzppP8nSl96-2FYSNTA-3D-3D)). - *Reverse mergers.* A reverse merger is a back-door listing where a private company merges into an existing public shell. About 20–21 biotechs have gone public this way this year. North Immunology, incubated over two years by portfolio manager Dan Schneeberger ("Sheep of Wall Street" on X) and an analyst, listed via the shell Athlon Medical with a PIPE (a private share sale alongside the deal). It is developing an IL-13/IL-18 bispecific antibody for atopic dermatitis (eczema) ([Biotech Hangout, Ep. 196](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhGRBdmKrqdaMax0gny3jmGEdhJWMfX9qMmHl0FJShBtHiIbLu8Ueq4t-2Fb-2FNLSyXvcZuM3YUnee-2FHekfTmnt0JUZ0fag5CkHEwegdjr4X29Ww-3D-3DdMHD_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19143r3ZXW-2BeZxecQqzwaQd9RBO0dwxx56Zt1kwKUsxXuD6AYsBD8UoFnBhuAmCDaJ6SJqsB4UQze4euGwfufjA7cy7yXjGMbpAMdNr8-2BAyOKsh6GJI-2FasbB1SnxtR9j-2BsfIQ-3D-3D)).
- *M&A.* The Readout Loud said acquisitions "have kind of taken a little bit of a breather." The notable deal was *Telix buying ITM* for about *$1.65 billion* up front. That creates a real challenger to Novartis in radiopharmaceuticals (cancer drugs that deliver radioactive particles directly to tumor cells). "Telix investors [are] a little wary of the deal" ([The Readout Loud](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhCoOoeWLi83mY9iZ-2BEtc2-2B-2B637v47CKoX8GkK0Cju8biXS25CMiOYe1PLc1LWXx2ezyjcI7dgc6CPGwDw27FCH-2FD5OeZncCz1A1gbqMyZapQ-3D-3DK3VM_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914xezGvDYF2-2F5iCZblfxiv2J6yzWgG3KuPS4mz0zHwChsa3LLSrM5kWC2y7XoN9OgIcP7Qiz-2B1q31eB11iGJUHmnhU3MsqLYwwkv-2BVZrnKGSpXlUNSteN3Ygd0a8JQSNTbw-3D-3D)). ### Theme 7: Pancreatic Cancer Finally Has a New Drug

- Revolution Medicines' *daraxonrasib* was approved on *Aug 26, 2026*. On Oncology Brothers, it was described as "the fastest drug approval in FDA history," for second-line pancreatic cancer. In the phase 3 RESOLUTE-302 trial, median survival went from *6.5 months to about 12–13 months*. CEO Mark Goldsmith said early tumor shrinkage showed up at just 80 mg. A company scientist then told him, "Mark, I think we're going to bend the mortality curve in pancreatic cancer." Goldsmith called the standing ovation at ASCO's plenary "an ovation that was heard around the world," and added: "We now carry a really profound responsibility to get the drug to patients."

### Theme 8: Safety Scares, AI in the Lab, and a Faster Medicare Path for Devices

- *CAR-T for autoimmune disease.* CAR-T is a therapy that re-engineers a patient's own immune cells. BioCentury said fatal toxicities are "testing autoimmune CAR T's safety thesis." Cabaletta's research suggests macrophages (a type of immune cell) from autoimmune patients release more IL-6 and IL-8 inflammatory signals. There is also concern that rapid-manufacturing processes, "especially Novartis' two-day system," make cells that release more interferon gamma. Both would raise the risk of dangerous inflammation. The takeaway: "rapid manufacturing of CAR-Ts... was meant to be the safer alternative. T-cell engagers are meant to be safer too... there's a lot of unknowns" ([BioCentury This Week](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhbfiaYa6u5v5gXg-2FnJN-2B2yO7hW6Ov7J1V-2BcmcC0hNvuMtNa8KxE8Qt1oSIAr1N4BcVGadSZv1HZZrCEaHGl2x2W7zzFepObyJCRqQPa0hfDQ-3D-3DdtWh_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914wFJ7qo59r5u9uHhuk3T6-2BtFWOXuN25LzTRUSbtS1tPUATUpFx-2F0wVmPZwpoP9hk9N2-2BH2ptH4uCgXAdxBSl0Co9hCyUZOIXB1LWGnEppetnz-2B1loCeCRZdMOHiMnZ1gow-3D-3D)).
- *AI in biology.* Several AI podcasts covered Anthropic's new San Francisco wet lab. ## Active Debates

**Lilly vs Novo: is Novo a "value trap"?** (A value trap is a stock that looks cheap but keeps falling.)

- *Bear on Novo:* UBS's *Michael Yee* on Fast Money: "We've been very consistent on this. We think it's a value trap." Lilly "offers a significantly better drug, is taking market share, and is beating numbers." Part of the drop was "the margin guidance." Novo "remains a show me story... it's going to take time. And in this market... people want to bet on the growth story, not the value story." He expects Lilly to hold about *65%* of obesity over five to seven years ([CNBC's Fast Money, 9/21](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiub5qJFjr9VvOnK79hE15Uvy2mtKS6GTkXqfCmeRadt-2F75PipToH9UR87os6yWwwp1O4ZgTnVjvCGv6SaOvik-2B55p-2FRUfRO94PoNGXKYWZnA-3D-3DG1o5_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914zzt5styifdhMCjqQnRtcO5KEZgD2p5NGI6-2FgYDDyAgytpuECOfYH0G69l-2BXex4LsWOENdo-2F5c8YVXpnU3WuhQluacQSSEduSINQ-2Fjx0oOJRMF0dulq03WM80LmcAeOL3g-3D-3D)).
- *Holding on:* Panelist Tim Seymour, who owns Novo: "It's even more of a value trap today than it was yesterday... Lilly at *32 times* forward, Novo at *11 and a half times* forward... I don't mind holding the stock." (Forward P/E is share price divided by expected earnings over the next year. A lower number means cheaper.) Another panelist: "I danced with the girl I brought to the prom. And I'm going to continue to dance with Novo" ([CNBC's Fast Money, 9/21](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiub5qJFjr9VvOnK79hE15Uvy2mtKS6GTkXqfCmeRadt-2F75PipToH9UR87os6yWwwp1O4ZgTnVjvCGv6SaOvik-2B55p-2FRUfRO94PoNGXKYWZnA-3D-3De77G_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19140bul4WVqdilcBoQGbGkh9589hEYGEOC8tIkwQ7WtvwtOVBFWbAZmFUiiMKCnr9RqbYAZJ3ONch-2BQmfbjTIXgOHOxFzTvxIy1xA1X9AwDI0N0wyvLGv6yMrECKZr8YPfjg-3D-3D)).

**Pill vs shot.** Yee argued that Novo gets little credit for the pill because "the injectable market is still going to be 65% or 75% of the overall market." The question is whether Lilly's Foundayo ends up "at or above" oral Wegovy in five years ([CNBC's Fast Money, 9/21](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiub5qJFjr9VvOnK79hE15Uvy2mtKS6GTkXqfCmeRadt-2F75PipToH9UR87os6yWwwp1O4ZgTnVjvCGv6SaOvik-2B55p-2FRUfRO94PoNGXKYWZnA-3D-3DJgfA_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914y4diteS0rZWCw2jEdBBNPIJgyWcW4KOT-2FUv008-2F2mS8KzeqAp8849fn9If6TPO9OH1KqNGedqhkuFxntBqcCCRifFqqp7LuxPmWlAvMFZz0-2F8jFTTONBuydU85Qcch8-2Fw-3D-3D)). Ricks' split (Zepbound for the heaviest patients, Foundayo for people with 25–30 pounds to lose) is Lilly's answer: it wants to win both ([Halftime Report](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhnOw6Ci0pcy2AvoZmpeHnQbQ7GZsbPFwgFcVBRx0A7sB-2FFW8g-2FcgHx7qdVTBvyT8jeATyQZ39p5TP1mFARDn9WDJjS7lSQhAX4imaArzn6Og-3D-3Dkygt_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914z-2Fw3xVuATU9yF1zoWGFBJxorUIATRW5GsBCIExrJjkq5DSsdaXIjRl7fNf2UE9mXut6o5pYi3AJQ4DiTYHr82uNvHEV7nWAkZOj-2Bt6Ney-2BMYw-2FgPuQGv-2FihsQHRKP-2BcsA-3D-3D)). On manufacturing, BioSpace noted analysts had thought Lilly's small-molecule pill might have an edge over Novo's peptide pill. **Is Viking a takeover target, or just another peptide?**

- *Bull:* Fast Money panelists called it "a game changer for a company that needs to add on." One estimated a Viking deal "would probably be seven and a half, $8 billion." - *Skeptic:* Yee said Viking "remains a question mark for a lot of people, given that it's still just a peptide, still going to do peptide manufacturing." He named Structure Therapeutics (GPCR) and its amylin drug as "still on the radar screen of a lot of players" ([CNBC's Fast Money, 9/21](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOiub5qJFjr9VvOnK79hE15Uvy2mtKS6GTkXqfCmeRadt-2F75PipToH9UR87os6yWwwp1O4ZgTnVjvCGv6SaOvik-2B55p-2FRUfRO94PoNGXKYWZnA-3D-3DYE-N_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914xlAsryFRRHlRSWwrZ5-2F7FAse5mpZn8694pE2483qYIzoUl0SE-2FG-2FQR8YdWFgNH3HBRrATskUSZ9pdqLmyz9rosnQFePbJgArqxhhOHM-2B6hYX3YEyQmh-2BzCagbZoKSTxxA-3D-3D)). **Is the biotech sell-off real or just mood?** Biotech Hangout's Paul called it mostly psychological: "It's not like I... hear anything like, oh man, things have flipped now, or I'm really worried about the FDA... With launch prices rising and midterms coming, "it just takes one tweet to roll the sector over" ([Biotech Hangout, Ep. 196](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhGRBdmKrqdaMax0gny3jmGEdhJWMfX9qMmHl0FJShBtHiIbLu8Ueq4t-2Fb-2FNLSyXvcZuM3YUnee-2FHekfTmnt0JUZ0fag5CkHEwegdjr4X29Ww-3D-3D8qXs_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19144J5BvRDMoMY-2BXd4zuIzC1gjO2Xxl2kF5yz1Kc-2BolP3MwPovagvgCCHHGkWu7Px5TIoU5TxrV8LAIaRru-2FNIlSysnp1boApb4q5JZFFRL-2BCFyqjDHCG5962xZ-2F3zB68OFg-3D-3D)).

**China: threat or partner?** US voices ask whether "we become too reliant on Chinese drugs." Chinese executives say "disease is the enemy," but only so many companies can survive. The US-investor holding-company structure is the practical workaround ([The Readout Loud](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhCoOoeWLi83mY9iZ-2BEtc2-2B-2B637v47CKoX8GkK0Cju8biXS25CMiOYe1PLc1LWXx2ezyjcI7dgc6CPGwDw27FCH-2FD5OeZncCz1A1gbqMyZapQ-3D-3DjdjR_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt19142opwp1CIJ6Tqw-2FFJsw-2Fl4xHXfxGVBRVfkV3TWN9oaDN8R5rS-2Bi5pAAc0qd0lF22T786ESEOpW4gM3knDko9Vtg0dpOkeonPuCd6kMA1PPIF9WWV5XCgPmcG-2B98DoAS1qg-3D-3D)).

**Can Lilly branch out beyond GLP-1s?** Halftime's Joe Terranova (owns LLY) pointed to Lilly's diversification: "$20 billion so far year to date in 2026" of M&A. Jim Lebenthal doesn't own it. He conceded the valuation "has come down quite a bit" to about *28x* forward, but said he prefers more diversified names like *AbbVie, AstraZeneca and Vertex* ([Halftime Report](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhnOw6Ci0pcy2AvoZmpeHnQbQ7GZsbPFwgFcVBRx0A7sB-2FFW8g-2FcgHx7qdVTBvyT8jeATyQZ39p5TP1mFARDn9WDJjS7lSQhAX4imaArzn6Og-3D-3D7KCJ_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbVWt2GgW-2FXQH8Cyz1hg6JlLG913WbTpYhi8ASBRt1914wyZmJaC6s4YINzr1CDG6kZrv7SDderuIQzM5prbGovKREdaNp-2Bk02UHUpk1-2FZV3Sz9X51TSyqt4ydhXPx7FRw9OXulo1ayB03c7jdJQqdKZfEPsr0LsBBrrFS1tAYIqrQ-3D-3D)).

## Stock-by-Stock Bull and Bear

| Company | Bull case (who said it) | Bear case (who said it) |
|---|---|---|
| Eli Lilly (LLY) | Wins 7 of 10 new Medicare GLP-1 patients. Foundayo gets 1 in 3 oral new starts. Diabetes approval for Foundayo expected later in 2026. Retatrutide and an amylin combination coming (Ricks, Halftime). "Significantly better drug... beating numbers" (Yee, UBS). About $20B of 2026 M&A to diversify (Terranova). | About 28–32x forward earnings. Diversification beyond obesity still unproven (Lebenthal, Halftime). Employers dropping GLP-1 coverage (Everybody's Business). Retatrutide classification lawsuit pending (On The Pen). |
| Novo (NVO) | Oral Wegovy is "probably the most successful pharma launch" with 1.5M patients. Tenfold capacity by 2030. $23B 2035 target (BioSpace). 11.5x forward earnings (Seymour, Fast Money). | "Value trap," losing share, margin-guidance worries (Yee). 75% of revenue from one molecule. US semaglutide patent expires 2032 (Fast Money, The Rundown). Down 8% on investor day and 27% over 12 months. |
| Viking (VKTX) | 22% weight loss at 33 weeks. Monthly-dose maintenance kept up to 90% of weight off. Stock +35%. Possible $7.5–8B takeover (Fast Money, BioSpace, On The Pen). | "Still just a peptide" (Yee). Small, multi-arm phase 1. Oral version had 20% dropouts vs 13% on placebo last year (BioSpace). |
| Roche (RHHBY) | CT-388 A1C drop of 2.65 points (4.13 in high-baseline patients). 62% reached normal blood sugar (On The Pen). Zealand partnership and more metabolic catalysts ahead (BioSpace). | Late to a market Lilly already leads. |
| Structure Therapeutics (GPCR) | "Still on the radar screen of a lot of players." Amylin asset (Yee, UBS). | Amylin value is still "wait and see" (Yee). |
| Revolution Medicines (RVMD) | Daraxonrasib approved Aug 26. Survival roughly doubled in second-line pancreatic cancer. Many later-generation drugs behind it (Oncology Brothers). | Incyte's G12D-targeted drug could compete in first line if DAWN-303 works (OncLive). |
| Incyte (INCY) | INCB161734 had a 37% response rate alone and above 50% with chemo. Phase 3 DAWN-303 underway (OncLive). | Early-stage data only. Goes up against an approved pan-RAS drug. |
| Xenon (XENE) | Epilepsy profile unchanged, no FDA clinical hold. Keppra's label carries similar warnings (Biotech Hangout). | Down about 30% after pausing its depression study over cognitive side effects and psychosis. Fears it's "not an M&A target anymore in the next 3 to 4 months." |
| Telix / ITM | $1.65B up-front deal creates a real rival to Novartis in radiopharma (The Readout Loud). | "Telix investors a little wary of the deal." |
| Novartis (NVS) | Radiopharma leader. | Del-brax setback after the Avidity deal is chilling big M&A (Biotech Hangout). Its two-day CAR-T manufacturing is under safety scrutiny (BioCentury). |
| J&J (JNJ) | Imaavy approved for warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia, with lupus and Sjögren's in phase 3 (DoctorPodcasts). | None raised this week. |
| Elektra Pharma | $350M upsized IPO. Phase 2/3 enrollment finishes 2H 2027; T/NK-cell cancer data 2H 2027 (BioCentury). | Fell 12% on day one. Investors may associate it with failed CD47 drugs. |
| AbbVie / AstraZeneca / Vertex / Merck | Preferred "more diversified" pharma (Lebenthal, Halftime). "Merck is outperforming. AbbVie already got the patent cliff behind it" (Fast Money). | None raised this week. |
| Natera (NTRA) | Final trade on Halftime: "I buy it on any pullback," a play on women's health, organ health and oncology. | None raised this week. |
