# Nvidia Bets 235 Billion Dollars on Itself While Credit Markets Push Back - The AI Capex Tracker - Week of September 29, 2026

> A synthesis of what podcasts said about AI capital spending on Monday, September 28, 2026, for the week of September 29, 2026: Nvidia's record 235 billion dollar buyback against credit bears pointing to stretched receivables, 13% CoreWeave debt and a record SoftBank junk deal, a Fortune 100 company planning to cut its Anthropic bill by 75%, Meta's enterprise AI push under ex-MongoDB CEO CJ Desai, and Bloom Energy's case that on-site power is going permanent ahead of Micron's earnings.

## The AI Capex Tracker

### Week of September 29, 2026: Nvidia Bets 235 Billion Dollars on Itself While Credit Markets Push Back

---

*(Covers podcasts published Monday, September 28. Yesterday's issue ended on a $10–12 trillion bill and a question: does it pay? On Monday, Nvidia answered with its wallet. It added $150 billion to its share buyback, taking the total to $235 billion, which is the largest in U.S. corporate history. The sell-side read it as a vote of confidence. The bears read something else: the one company printing cash is buying back its own stock while its customers borrow at junk-bond rates to keep buying its chips. In between, Meta hired MongoDB's CEO to sell AI to businesses, a Fortune 100 company said it plans to cut its Anthropic bill by 75%, and the 10-year Treasury yield touched 5.27%. Micron reports tomorrow.)*

## TL;DR

- *Nvidia is putting roughly $40 billion a quarter back into its own stock.* It added "$150 billion" to its buyback and expects to complete "$235 billion of buybacks by fiscal 28." Bernstein's Stacy Rasgon: that's "like $40 billion a quarter, which is double what we were modeling," and about "50% of my free cash flow across fiscal 27 and 28." But "in the context of a $5 trillion market cap, it's still not that big" ([Squawk on the Street, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhRTsj-2FXJYr-2FdESCrtub8RrkRPuQmfQgTYfMMYmObx1meVG8THMBZ-2FPhcCzbqPS9itUoDTwJ0L9y9QuQ-2FvMTSBy4-2BSYB2IQMO7q1PhuRQR2aQ-3D-3DcslS_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDR-2BB1-2BIJzyuxeN52p3ASYccB72weelmD8LF7fa4VEiUbiLBLG2L2WDW3pEzZgLjbxJdXb9rlsFsMEF0EwMCHrZAx9lj-2FfbPU5skvKauxVtr6NkN-2Fx-2FlVs3FOlACywSPguA-3D-3D)). Bloomberg Intelligence's Kunjan Sabani calls it "positive, but not thesis changing" ([Bloomberg Tech, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOi499pqVc1kK6i4McXwyxYSEu-2BuZc2kQJS7gkzS1tLYMQOEh73toQlBonCysV8SiJ6lEaPV39Uv9ZyIJn-2BnjiV-2B-2By53WABSqqOFQsubYkceLQ-3D-3DJTNJ_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDcF5u9OcOXll0p105B-2FV9xS11Ti2Lp7Ve7iXFfDrk8O8KUbOpXtvRUP-2BSc-2B6Ll0V23lI8pDwGr0YGxhWmUtTrtBYBdX9dfeBoljeCDyqcxQIMGIm848c9p7bGZNnVMIrsg-3D-3D)).
- *The credit bears say the same cash pile is the tell.* Ed Dowd says Nvidia's receivables (money customers owe it) went "from 40 days outstanding to 65," which is "vendor financing," the same move "Cisco, Nortel, and Lucent" made in the dot-com bust. CoreWeave's five-year note trades "at 13% or 850 basis points" over Treasuries ([Soar Financially, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOj7HGmnRuWl0ccmSLhxjyy5AIzllnQU1VGtQidPGBIoZHsW2m-2BeRLD-2FIXm-2Bi3NTK0yJriCDC4CQ9ykeAp0B3niP7kLS-2FbPePekkLyNY72Wyxg-3D-3DYDEE_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDSvfu2eHZvrirMcstI2JHyEFBD8-2FZqCopfJ6gAHwB8hKtd-2FIljy4RTO6WbX8CvoTUsdhuK1Gkyl78pJ8KT-2BjmTeAU2zwTKtVLHk8t6-2FH20BWG5OXUc09Oi3osxfFpibQ8w-3D-3D)). New Constructs' David Trainer points to SoftBank paying "up to 9.75%" on "the largest ever junk bond deal" to fund OpenAI, and says "the liquidity tide has turned" ([Money Life with Chuck Jaffe, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOjc25Txf-2BAp4IaTNc2gjSWkNjXspy3SrK-2BldvHpDz7AQ6zP3u1jlNNq4S6N98T6ns-2FqOOgbVs7i-2Bf1TyCAwFGIGFYSTpF5norL-2FVtoE71pLmA-3D-3DCgjL_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDVqXzxop3uPe5D2wgT8wr814X6VybJMVRNFcrxJ8-2F1yTU3xFPkkF2qBtQN7NXojEPcb1o5p8sOGF3jPxJXsItpSf1gXCxiOlBeWoGO8QV-2Bvz-2Fqutbtbst4TJNKAQHo43jA-3D-3D)).
- *The first real crack on the demand side came from a customer, not a critic.* On The Six Five, one of the hosts says a Fortune 100 company "spent 200 million dollars a year on token spend with Anthropic," and is "working on a plan to reduce that spend by about 75%" by shifting work to open-source and on-device models ([The Six Five, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOg-2F-2B5lPXXPzTD8r3kpi8f7hAWGKQg8nCV4fYXPn-2FianQNrNZwhia139MvF6yLo5AughnSJHVNCZrf1jL2OJAyPn8L-2B4szxMcwykfY5S3mbXag-3D-3DWpeO_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDWXCHgoLdsDznUl3YL8Es92PYrl4T-2BKunKdYwQj3ZrTRRsrCNHkYOBUyzymtvH5tujFZNYbND2-2BxY9SkMarV7t1rqSBhu-2BgCk5M6V4JkbcRsHM-2BWdYGvZmtbdV1goDev9w-3D-3D)). Bloomberg Intelligence says enterprises are finding "the consumption is ahead of the budget" ([Bloomberg Intelligence, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOh8fHtU6MS1KjxqLL4O4jgfe-2FtBG28flPez6yWu1YGVKhTo5sMRCNeDwBB2Q6JdNtG-2FhXAOyevyssCz8B-2BVyCKHIWaGz-2BGXHGmRFBZeZPUkBw-3D-3DXSum_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDVETU-2FZrZ-2Bj4B65N0y2ewtZ1hppSiqkB77jvNX1wF2PeJxOWCdO6BPgpPLETZTj7dxW2y4STigY-2Be1L9JRBOGmboVhK0-2FYgI6d-2Bh6QbETcDfxVbGa-2BJM2giGXzEKzT7AfQ-3D-3D)).

## What's new

*A quick plain-English key.* *Buyback authorization*: permission from the board to spend up to a set amount repurchasing the company's own shares. It is a ceiling, not a commitment. *Free cash flow (FCF)*: the cash a business has left after paying for its operations and its investment spending. *Receivables / days outstanding*: how long, on average, customers take to pay their bills. When that stretches, the seller is effectively lending to its customers. *Vendor financing*: a supplier helping customers pay for its own products, through credit terms, loans or guarantees. *Basis points (bps)*: hundredths of a percentage point, so 850 bps = 8.5 percentage points. *Credit default swap (CDS)*: insurance against a borrower defaulting; a rising price means rising worry. *Junk / high-yield*: debt rated below investment grade. *Levelized cost of electricity (LCOE)*: the standard way to compare power costs over a plant's life, per megawatt-hour.

(All sell-side or buy-side commentary on a company announcement. No Nvidia executive is quoted on the buyback itself.)

*The facts as reported.* Bloomberg Tech: Nvidia "boosts the size of its share buyback plan by a record $150 billion, taking the total amount to $235 billion." Marketplace says that sits "on top of an $80 billion buyback already announced" and "beat[s] Apple's buyback record." CNBC says Nvidia expects "to complete $235 billion of buybacks by fiscal 28." Bloomberg Tech adds that Nvidia had "just north of $99 billion" in cash and short-term investments at the end of its fiscal Q2 2027. The shares rose about 2% on a day when tech was broadly lower.

*Rasgon's math is the one to keep.*

"$235 billion by the end of fiscal 28 is over the next six quarters. It's like $40 billion a quarter, which is double what we were modeling. Although if I sort of look at my model, it's about 50% of my free cash flow across fiscal 27 and 28."

His framing is that the buyback is big in absolute terms and modest relative to the company. "In the context of a $5 trillion market cap, it's still not that big. And presumably, they're not going to be finished by the end of 28. If all goes well, they should be generating a lot more cash in fiscal 29." CNBC's Mike Santoli put it in context: Apple's 2018 "$100 billion" buyback was "11% or 12% of market cap"; Nvidia's is "less than 5%."

*How much cash is coming.* The Bloomberg Intelligence analyst: "in this financial year they'll generate something like $200 billion of cash flow. Next year it's expected by consensus to go up to about $330 billion." He also noted Nvidia "recently spent… $18 to $20 billion… on Hugging Face." His read on the buyback: either "the shares are undervalued" or "maybe they're running out of things to invest the money in… probably a mixture of the two." BI credit analyst Schiffman is more bullish: "we see their free cash flow potentially going to a trillion dollars over the next couple of years."

*The "why is the stock lagging" puzzle.* CNBC noted that over "the last 12 months, it's up about 30%, which puts it pretty much on par with, like, Archer Daniels Midland," despite "80% revenue growth, more than 100% profit growth." Rasgon's diagnosis:

- *Investors played the bottlenecks instead*: "memory and semi-cap and networking and power and, more recently, CPUs," because those had "more torque" to earnings.
- *It's too big to own more of.* At "8% of the S&P," some clients find "it's just hard for them to own more of it," so it gets used "to fund some of these other plays." His counterpoint: "Samsung and Hynix collectively are two-thirds of the Kospi. So clearly those weights can… get bigger."
- *His bottom line:* "if they're not ultimately successful, I don't think anybody else can be. So I still like it."

*The skeptic inside the bullish camp.* Kunjan Sabani (BI): the buyback "signals that the company believes that the stock is cheap" and reassures investors "concerned that the company is deploying too much cash into those financing deals." But "it doesn't do anything to address the fundamental risks that can the capex from hyperscalers sustain, the rising competition from the ASIC areas… [and] circular financing."

*Other Nvidia disclosures the same day.* Bloomberg Tech reported the company said "their commits or their backlog continues to grow," with "Anthropic… a case study to date [of] $180 billion of NVIDIA hardware commitments across its different deployments." Nvidia also launched an open-source AI-agent safety platform (OpenShell plus a new product, "NVIDIA Sentry"). Bloomberg's Maggie Eastland linked it to the industry's safety debate: "We saw just last Friday OpenAI said they were pausing training." Sabani's read: "Even if you slow down training… to add more compliance, safety, security, you still need more compute."

*Why it moves numbers.* At roughly $40 billion a quarter, the buyback puts a large, steady buyer under the stock through fiscal 2028, and it is backed by cash rather than debt. The tension for the capex thesis: Nvidia is sending about half its free cash flow back to shareholders while its customers borrow to keep buying. Schiffman sees that as healthy: Nvidia is "just acting as a bank for everybody." The bears see the same facts as the last stage of a cycle. Which is next.

(Dowd and Trainer are macro and forensic-accounting bears, not operators. Their numbers are cited from markets and filings but weren't independently verified on air.)

*Dowd: "Credit always ends the party."* His case, point by point:

- *Nvidia is lending to its customers.* "NVIDIA got to the point last quarter where I guess financing was becoming a problem. They started to extend very favorable credit terms to their customers… Their receivables went from 40 days outstanding to 65… We saw this in the dot-com bubble… Cisco, Nortel, and Lucent started vendor financing. And that carried the CapEx trade a little further, but eventually it all went south."
- *Neocloud debt is priced as junk.* CoreWeave's "five-year note… is trading at 13% or 850 basis points to the five-year… That's junk." CDS for "Oracle and CoreWeave, some of the neoclouds and hyperscalers have been exploding."
- *The bond supply is coming.* "Apparently the hyperscalers are going to issue something to the tune of 360 billion in credit in 2027. So bond investors are starting to choke on this paper and they're questioning the whole ROI."
- *Private credit is leaking.* "We've had two quarters of outflows. And now a third quarter." He says some large managers are "gating" redemptions, and "for private credit to work, it needs constant flow."
- *Customers are going around the labs.* Enterprises are "hosting their own AI open source on their own servers and cutting out… the frontier models in their token sales model."

"Credit ended the party in the dot-com boom. Credit ended the party in the housing boom. And credit is in the process of ending this party."

He does allow for a delay: "I fully expect the administration to do everything they can to keep the stock market elevated through midterms."

*Trainer: the liquidity tide has turned.* New Constructs put "the AI bubble" in its "Danger Zone." Trainer's rule, borrowed from a hedge-fund client, is that a bubble ends with "a liquidity squeeze." His warning signs:

1. *Delayed IPOs.* "Anthropic and OpenAI both have pushed their IPOs out," and SoftBank-backed SB Energy "couldn't get that deal done… Because of valuation."
2. *Borrowing costs.* SoftBank "paid up to 9.75% on a debt deal… to fund AI spending, to give OpenAI some more money… the largest ever junk bond deal in the history of the world." (A separate recap episode on Deep Values puts the SoftBank raise at "$11 billion in junk bonds" ([Deep Values, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOg1DWE3eYmfpRjTJdxfQWWkG65k1k0B50Xyyh5Oi1gvdKpD-2FXe0NqFAGLa6Iq-2FrfJwNVoqKcmI9OwAq2egn7DsF8Chw266MetMHFA-2Bg5tcDYw-3D-3DzAKn_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDSSp6NzpzhOLaUKHQTYEtXwx5YvF1a1X-2BEgcThxvf0ffegnVIhcvEgMsn6GI-2FCXfoTZQjb3SBxLvbl77lYHS0ySBtubSWJtc-2F9togvwJN7U-2FagpfN3hFKqmBWiVgCvMnGQ-3D-3D)).)
3. *CDS.* Protection "between Oracle and Meta and SpaceX… is skyrocketing."
4. *The risk-free rate.* Treasury yields are "up a lot."

His biggest number: "close to 4 trillion of hidden off balance sheet debt" and "3.6 trillion in purchase commitments," which he compares to the 2008 "wall of adjustable rate mortgage payments." His advice: "if it were me, I'd be getting out right now."

*The other side of the credit desk.* Schiffman (BI credit) sees "CapEx… spent through 2031 from the hyperscalers… now going to reach $9 trillion," with "IG borrowing probably in and around $500 billion" next year. His view: "People have been very, very concerned that there's both an AI bubble, there's a credit bubble. We don't see it at all. We've never seen demand stronger." And on Money Life, BondBloxx's strategist said data-center paper is showing up in "the double B market… that was never even part of the high yield indices before the fall of last year," usually "at a premium" to comparable spreads. Still, "there are real backlogs there's real demand for this data center capacity… real revenues real cash flows."

*Why it moves numbers.* Both sides agree on one fact: AI is now a big, growing share of the credit market. They disagree on whether that's financing a boom or propping one up. The receivables figure is testable. Nvidia's next 10-Q will show whether days outstanding keep climbing. That is a cleaner signal than any pundit's call.

(Analysts relaying conversations with customers. The Fortune 100 company is not named.)

This is the most useful new data point of the cycle, because it comes from the paying customer. One of the hosts (the transcript doesn't clearly mark which):

"I talked to one Fortune 100 company this week. They told me they spent 200 million dollars a year on token spend with Anthropic but they said they were working on a plan to reduce that spend by about 75% by offloading to open source and offloading to device running certain N minus 2, 3, 4 workloads closer to the edge."

("N minus 2, 3, 4" means routing work to models two to four generations behind the frontier, which are much cheaper.) He also gave the counterweight: "the utilization keeps going up," and "if they can make the intelligence less and less expensive I think they can scale more and more demand on the APIs."

The hosts added a price-war angle. One says Anthropic's top model triples "the amount of output tokens to get it correct," which he reads as "Claude's lack of… infrastructure." He also says OpenAI "lowered his prices… by up to 50%" in response. (This is the hosts' own benchmarking claim, from Signal65, the research firm they co-founded.)

The Bloomberg Intelligence analyst described the same pattern more broadly: companies "largely let their engineers run loose," then "suddenly realized that the consumption is ahead of the budget." They must now either "increase our dollar budgets" or "moderate or change the way our engineers are using AI tokens… the answer has so far been a bit of a mixture of the two." On hyperscaler Q3 guidance: "the market's still anticipating growth in spending next year. Obviously nowhere near the pace we've seen this year." The "biggest constraint… is the supply side… fab units… chips… energy and space."

*Why it moves numbers.* The bull case assumes token demand grows fast enough to fill every gigawatt. A 75% cut by one large buyer isn't a trend. But if enterprises shift routine work to cheaper, older or open models, revenue per token falls even as usage rises. That's good for total compute demand (the Jevons effect: cheaper things get used more) but hard on frontier-lab pricing, and the labs are the tenants behind many of the leases financed in item 2. Watch for it on the Q3 calls.

(Reported news plus analyst commentary.)

*The move.* MongoDB's "CJ Desai is stepping down effective immediately" to lead "Meta's new enterprise platform, bringing its AI models, agents, infrastructure to business customers," reporting "directly to Mark Zuckerberg." MongoDB fell as much as 27% intraday, and was "down 17%" later in the show. Meta fell about "4%" even though "the sell side is really positive" on the plan.

*Why it matters for capex.* The Bloomberg reporter framed it as a way for Zuckerberg to "diversify… revenue streams as it pursues these enormous AI ambitions," competing with "Microsoft… Amazon Web Services… Google, who are already offering many of these same services." BI calls enterprise "the new… theater of competition." It's Meta's "biggest, most significant push" there, including something like "forward deployed engineers" (staff embedded at client companies).

*The options market wasn't buying it.* CBOE's Renick: "seven of the top eight trades out of the gate were actually bearish," and "almost 70,000 calls were likely sold versus 50,000 bought," as traders faded the rally that followed Muse.

*Muse's hardware footprint.* Moorhead: Meta is "giving a VM per person" (a dedicated virtual computer for each user) and it's "sitting on… AMD EPYC processors." He says this "got all of the CPU numbers up," with "Intel for the month… up 40%" and Arm "up 30%." Newman: Futurum's 2030 forecast for CPUs in AI "went from 110 billion… to 250 billion… That was September 18th… We're probably going to double that… again."

*Why it moves numbers.* An enterprise business gives Meta a way to earn back its capex that doesn't depend only on ads. That matters because the bear case this week says agents could undercut ad revenue. A recap of Steve Eisman's work on Deep Values makes that argument: "If the AI buys the ticket, who clicks the ad?" ([Deep Values, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOg1DWE3eYmfpRjTJdxfQWWkG65k1k0B50Xyyh5Oi1gvdKpD-2FXe0NqFAGLa6Iq-2FrfJwNVoqKcmI9OwAq2egn7DsF8Chw266MetMHFA-2Bg5tcDYw-3D-3Dbgz5_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDRgFHaSML6T3-2BTLxQsSQgIDrS8pu87WzkHo1jnkp6v1S3ppMND0gMjY3NbjiIecwNsozlgWkMEAoOYdFHSdpGhniwAFtvqxgSx9FM7cgdjB5Sep7QtmOCTFnL5fWceZ04g-3D-3D)). Meta has spent years proving it can sell ads. It has never sold to businesses.

[Sounds of Solar Podcast, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhPSYJk-2FeMEracp2uGNLZK-2B6sESz4V7Mowjn1nxyoCjKDLXtUKHbD7YOPLPUJYWIG2-2FQ-2FnmYTAq3cfwh-2BmS2OwM7k6W8lWVrNM3aljL9V2rnQ-3D-3DpqQi_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDSWLCE-2BQbP-2FavRQ0uxGm2wH0uOaoFxqkJXvPf5Va39-2FjvwRj2QzangeWLYJh20u2aKNwvXOLwI33I4vhTOMy5fGXA-2FfwnO8zVGhooPJpuQ430slLbrsmofjlBITelZ-2FAlw-3D-3D): engineers from EVS, a solar, substation and transmission engineering firm. (Operator testimony.)

*Joshi's customer survey.* In 2024, "about 13-ish percent" of customers said they'd need on-site power by 2030. In "April this year… it was more like 35 percent," and "50 percent of them said… we're planning our own energy needs based on on-site power." The big shift is from "bridge" to permanent: "In early 2025 data center customers were still going with combustion technologies thinking that… generators are going to be on site for maybe two years, three years, five years and then the grid will show up. Now they realize that that's not going to be the case."

*His cost argument.* "People… talk about, hey, you can get $0.06, $0.08 power. True, but that is the cost of power at the point of generation." On top of that, grid power needs "step-up transformers… $5 to $10 a megawatt hour," then "high voltage transmission lines… another $20 to $30 a megawatt hour," then substations and distribution. His conclusion: "even if grid is available in 5 years or 7 or 10 years… the cost of that electricity is going to be much, much higher." He argues LCOE is "wrong math" for data centers. Instead he uses the "total dollar per watt delivered cost of electricity into the rack."

*Why communities push back, in numbers.* One gigawatt of combined-cycle gas turbines emits "about… 720 pounds per day of NOx" (nitrogen oxides, a smog-forming pollutant), "like having 150,000 new cars on the road." It uses "about 4.5-ish million gallon per day of water… like people having 300,000 showers a day." He also says Bloom's C&I (commercial and industrial) customers are "growing at 50% year over year," led by "semiconductor fabs." On a slowdown: "I read a lot of articles where people are questioning what if this data center build slows down. I just don't see it."

*The engineer's reality check.* EVS's engineers on Sounds of Solar are more cautious. Behind-the-meter "mega grid[s]" of "hundreds of megawatts" are "harder than what it looks," because hyperscalers "need 99.9999% uptime." On the forecasts: "there's a lot of predictions… this many gigawatts of data center… It's all over the place. It's not going to hit those numbers," without utility cooperation. They point to batteries as the fix for AI's sudden "in-rush" power spikes.

*Why it moves numbers.* If on-site gas and fuel cells become permanent rather than temporary, that's a structurally bigger market for Bloom, GE Vernova's aeroderivative turbines and engine makers. It matches last issue's Morgan Stanley data (turbines booking into "2031 and 2032"). The EVS caveat is the risk: gigawatt targets slip when the physical plumbing lags.

## The debate

*Bull: the cash is real, the demand is real, and the constraint is supply.*

- *The best-capitalized company in the chain is buying its own stock with cash, not debt.* That's "$235 billion" through fiscal 2028, about "50%" of free cash flow ([Squawk on the Street, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhRTsj-2FXJYr-2FdESCrtub8RrkRPuQmfQgTYfMMYmObx1meVG8THMBZ-2FPhcCzbqPS9itUoDTwJ0L9y9QuQ-2FvMTSBy4-2BSYB2IQMO7q1PhuRQR2aQ-3D-3DxiAr_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDdP9L1t3gPDDgMonkyOV-2FBK2fzP8ugJEmOJcQlFdnjo6I0GJatS69ko1H43ng9JRy45GOBl-2Fr6GfVOlUwd9zO-2F5Vt2cg-2FJfpy-2BSttCRLISpswVTV3XU9cd-2Fz3hRP6RrAuQ-3D-3D)), on "$200 billion" of cash flow this year and "$330 billion" expected next ([Bloomberg Intelligence, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOh8fHtU6MS1KjxqLL4O4jgfe-2FtBG28flPez6yWu1YGVKhTo5sMRCNeDwBB2Q6JdNtG-2FhXAOyevyssCz8B-2BVyCKHIWaGz-2BGXHGmRFBZeZPUkBw-3D-3DUZhn_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDbTmhUHOONiqbB7Haei3s5gbfAqIPadJBS5ehyx8dQUSzM-2F-2FHM59TBO3WxxylVjVjMQDGE-2FwqljRg3DKhQxpgjuAvR2JgwQcNia5DLJ3cIGa24QOT-2BOxtbB2iJfx0HelmA-3D-3D)).

- *Commitments can't unwind quickly.* Blue Whale's Stephen (introduced only by first name) says customer commitments are "very much extended, which means that you can't actually pull out your orders so quickly." That gives picks-and-shovels suppliers "supernormal profits… for the next 18 months at least." For Nvidia's earnings to collapse you'd need "a coordinated effort" by all AI spenders to stop ([Merryn Talks Money, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOi1kapR97ppo76F5-2FEZelruX0RqI3KJrKQusD-2FngySyK3UJJozJbEItjCjxXK89dInPQ-2BafCxpjqpjuCNYGtzpm56cOn522kDdJXjhVKBUMYw-3D-3D4c91_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDQfKtHH-2FlIaB4bVmZUbfvpyTCrTReCTHCYlzbUlthNqGzDDQZyFq7UhRPWRln-2Fa8oXcE7kfkcowo1XeVh-2FPX-2FeSft8hjlPxeX7f80Lq2gX6JdoyGYJbbkBb0769EFGwuQg-3D-3D)).
- *The shortage is agreed.* Trivariate's Adam Parker: "There's a shortage of compute. There's a shortage of power." Tech's 2027 earnings expectations "are 70% higher today than they were a year ago, and staples are 4% lower. So people say it's not trading on fundamentals. Maybe it is" ([Squawk on the Street, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhRTsj-2FXJYr-2FdESCrtub8RrkRPuQmfQgTYfMMYmObx1meVG8THMBZ-2FPhcCzbqPS9itUoDTwJ0L9y9QuQ-2FvMTSBy4-2BSYB2IQMO7q1PhuRQR2aQ-3D-3DIZHG_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDWa8SuNuTW5l5tgGV5ABpOviD3Eywa2HqkmkcYk1xfmCzd-2FI-2FmrZnRv0sIolfNoNmiRYJblQetly-2BIifvJx0LQdsKDb9QUsVK34ijN0q-2BsL64waFozwTlNjZKbmBKlJ-2Frg-3D-3D)).

2. *Nvidia's receivable days rise again* in its next filing. That would confirm the vendor-financing read.
3. *More enterprise "token optimization" stories on Q3 calls,* especially from the labs' biggest customers.
4. *Oracle cut to junk.* Still one notch away (from last issue).
5. *The 10-year holding above 5%.* It's now at 5.27%.
6. *Hyperscaler bond deals pricing wide,* or a failed deal. With "~$500 billion" of IG supply expected next year (BI) versus "360 billion" (Dowd), the market will test demand quickly.

## Read-throughs

- *Memory (MU, SK Hynix, Samsung): the print is tomorrow, and the bar is historic.* Trivariate's Adam Parker: "everyone knows they're going to produce maybe one of the best quarters ever produced by a manufacturing company in the history of humankind. 50 billion in revenue, 86% gross margin… The question is, is the market rewarded or not?" His playbook assumes multiples "contract," so the only question is whether earnings "can… grow through it and not miss" ([Squawk on the Street, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhRTsj-2FXJYr-2FdESCrtub8RrkRPuQmfQgTYfMMYmObx1meVG8THMBZ-2FPhcCzbqPS9itUoDTwJ0L9y9QuQ-2FvMTSBy4-2BSYB2IQMO7q1PhuRQR2aQ-3D-3DDCmN_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDXOXYTCoLHqVGk6BlgeLvfnTVOlH21ivG4LC2h1EbjwKj8S92vOja-2FOlBTtpo7dGGrdbyyMxB-2F9KaZ-2Fhp1JYGAc7McJdCMBlBUPSwJLsqj-2Bp2pUrnedLtkpuZ191y12R0g-3D-3D)). Rasgon's checklist: "ASP upside and whether or not the long-term agreements… have capped their ability to continue to take price," "the overall demand environment," and Micron's "CapEx outlook," which matters for the chip-equipment names he covers (same source). *Most actionable:* last issue flagged the 14-week-versus-13-week quarter effect on the guide. Add Rasgon's point: any sign that long-term contracts are capping price increases is the bear catalyst for the whole memory group.
- *Power / thermal (BE, GEV, VRT, ETN): on-site power goes permanent.* Bloom's survey went from "13-ish" to "35" to "50 percent" of customers planning on-site power, and customers now treat it as "permanent" rather than a bridge ([Catalyst with Shayle Kann, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOjQWF-2BMX6oT5FTqUIk5g825I5fFz4Ufg8OlZ-2FyI-2BvRTNEGUXTl7FrOqEYYMst7OkwVopc3rFmpiycVhYKlYFTPFKI-2B3dZD3P9nNcK-2F3k4yQ8w-3D-3D_kHx_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDVK7JNuG8Ho4sjEDZqLkJNhWHuCyipbUarnflwGfI-2F3AmC24FhnBl2VVYVKuzlLj2izkdzD-2F52BpJm0E0JwROteslaAfmM3TH1UcgDxEdbAtrq7I383Q-2B-2BUWKxWkxiv-2B8Q-3D-3D); sponsored segment). Engineers warn that gigawatt forecasts are "all over the place" and "not going to hit those numbers" without the utilities ([Sounds of Solar Podcast, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhPSYJk-2FeMEracp2uGNLZK-2B6sESz4V7Mowjn1nxyoCjKDLXtUKHbD7YOPLPUJYWIG2-2FQ-2FnmYTAq3cfwh-2BmS2OwM7k6W8lWVrNM3aljL9V2rnQ-3D-3D5uhG_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDQb8Nnun7vt8PmymUCwyY7ZffHKA9F-2FThBg27m8SunJ36ZIVXkNwWK5J1uE6-2BFvQyunnra-2BbFXI16LlhpOs11zk5Ktcle-2BjF4x6QtpP6SQ4FYD5AzHY9eCH3zjuo-2FPL0aw-3D-3D)). *Most actionable:* grid-adder math ($5–10 plus $20–30 per MWh) supports on-site vendors' pricing power. Batteries are the underappreciated read-through for handling AI load spikes.
- *Semi-cap equipment: Micron's capex is the tell.* Rasgon flagged it explicitly ([Squawk on the Street, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOhRTsj-2FXJYr-2FdESCrtub8RrkRPuQmfQgTYfMMYmObx1meVG8THMBZ-2FPhcCzbqPS9itUoDTwJ0L9y9QuQ-2FvMTSBy4-2BSYB2IQMO7q1PhuRQR2aQ-3D-3D_Xz3_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDU9cHJS0z0tX5jvP0srPbLhO-2BwTzgy-2FYNLU6rgZpVALraurWlJjX8xo1IGxMGEbwGlm1GwXWiMRkWTn2R0VODIXydyMnuNKqTCYrzaJm1IgevsEDr5FByfCAB-2BUdtwTOKQ-3D-3D)). *Most actionable:* a Micron capex raise is bullish for the equipment makers even if the memory stocks sell off on margin.
- *CPUs (AMD, INTC, ARM): agents need general-purpose computing.* Muse's "VM per person" design pushed Intel "up 40%" and Arm "30%" this month ([The Six Five, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOg-2F-2B5lPXXPzTD8r3kpi8f7hAWGKQg8nCV4fYXPn-2FianQNrNZwhia139MvF6yLo5AughnSJHVNCZrf1jL2OJAyPn8L-2B4szxMcwykfY5S3mbXag-3D-3DHESU_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDcYdD7k4cuB8weuwpU5lrpPPIbgrTE40DXAo-2FQ6B2HogKF-2BqbNIx2-2FAgZNbJ8vnMOje0CPWZV5xA2-2BPYsG2cEgA8GCYvDWBU6OYL446oJ8HnAw3938lNUKaQTqYpgQ6Xww-3D-3D)). *Most actionable:* a new, CPU-heavy leg of AI demand that the GPU-only framing misses.
- *Credit / neoclouds (CRWV, ORCL): the pressure point.* "13%" CoreWeave paper and "exploding" CDS ([Soar Financially, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOj7HGmnRuWl0ccmSLhxjyy5AIzllnQU1VGtQidPGBIoZHsW2m-2BeRLD-2FIXm-2Bi3NTK0yJriCDC4CQ9ykeAp0B3niP7kLS-2FbPePekkLyNY72Wyxg-3D-3DNPAR_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDXtPm04vaDHyqSS9x7ZDKWSf5rtsOm0w-2BOrK7mCUXhOuEf8bAFghxLEB5AZjtr8ul2jf4z4x7bBuDZD4wu-2F-2FLDTpGu8ZycpFt5TMr-2BErZ9I-2B30F-2F6EbhhQt4uu7-2FT6oaVQ-3D-3D)); the BB high-yield market is taking data-center bonds for the first time ([Money Life with Chuck Jaffe, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOjc25Txf-2BAp4IaTNc2gjSWkNjXspy3SrK-2BldvHpDz7AQ6zP3u1jlNNq4S6N98T6ns-2FqOOgbVs7i-2Bf1TyCAwFGIGFYSTpF5norL-2FVtoE71pLmA-3D-3DpqFk_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDSKmsr4oSeABVYwyRaQgCI9G3ZE0wf1baQoQsK5US8I0bYX9fyg55iRZ6GqQIEqfEylUV4lnH74f9viztiPXkHy20IbDfMtscoYZhhr2DfoesM-2Fa416bkH-2F20fgeAVjqYw-3D-3D)). *Most actionable:* spreads, not stocks, are where stress would show first.

## What changed vs last issue

Last issue (Monday, Sept 28, "A $12 trillion bill. Jensen says it pays for itself.") covered Friday through Sunday: Chanos's returns-below-cost-of-capital-by-"mid-27" call, Goldman's $10–12 trillion five-year figure, Jensen Huang's "$50 billion" build / "$40 to $50 billion" rent math, and Zitron's claim that half the chips are warehoused. This edition covers Monday alone. The story moved from *whether the spending pays* to *who is funding it, and on what terms*.

- *Aggregate capex anchor: another long-range number, roughly in line.* Last issue: Goldman's "$10 to $12 trillion" over five years for data centers, and "1.2 [trillion]" of global capex for 2027. This cycle: BI's Schiffman sees hyperscaler capex through 2031 reaching "$9 trillion" ([Bloomberg Tech, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOi499pqVc1kK6i4McXwyxYSEu-2BuZc2kQJS7gkzS1tLYMQOEh73toQlBonCysV8SiJ6lEaPV39Uv9ZyIJn-2BnjiV-2B-2By53WABSqqOFQsubYkceLQ-3D-3D1tfB_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDSSDHQA-2B6ody7-2FG-2B1w9MMot4hTrrU7lfP8zOGWU6RN83-2FuJCPrcWcxWwSi10XHjUAhEdPQ7tLvyMAFcx566FmO-2Bbq90vFfh8xhtqJxgkyuyHBRhAe42eE4K9d99OEu06RA-3D-3D)). A different scope (hyperscalers only, about six years), so not a clean comparison, but it doesn't dispute the scale. BI's equity analyst expects 2027 growth "nowhere near the pace we've seen this year" ([Bloomberg Intelligence, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOh8fHtU6MS1KjxqLL4O4jgfe-2FtBG28flPez6yWu1YGVKhTo5sMRCNeDwBB2Q6JdNtG-2FhXAOyevyssCz8B-2BVyCKHIWaGz-2BGXHGmRFBZeZPUkBw-3D-3Dz08P_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDeYcFfJXppyjRxKOTDqNiJDZQUVDqvA1r4EMW01PrH92kS7386XOG1-2BNjeFf-2BxS9O-2F-2B2-2BcsXlvnIdjxRrjuxUvjpPe31NbRvNaX-2FcRrcyvfjX8pPV2-2Bj5vxYTF0wMKclFg-3D-3D)). That's the first explicit deceleration call from a mainstream sell-side voice in several issues.
- *Nvidia: from "chips as collateral" to cash returned.* Last issue: Huang pitched GPUs as airplane-like collateral. This cycle: $150 billion added to the buyback, $235 billion in total, "$180 billion" of Anthropic commitments, and a bear counter that receivable days went from 40 to 65.
- *Credit: sharper numbers on both sides.* Last issue: Chanos said credit markets "have begun to tighten," and Goldman went underweight hyperscaler issuance. This cycle: CoreWeave at "13%," SoftBank at "9.75%," "360 billion" of 2027 hyperscaler credit (Dowd) against "~$500 billion" of IG borrowing next year (Schiffman). The two supply estimates differ; both are large.
- *10-year Treasury: higher.* Last issue: "5.23%." This cycle: "5.27%" intraday ([Bloomberg Tech, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOi499pqVc1kK6i4McXwyxYSEu-2BuZc2kQJS7gkzS1tLYMQOEh73toQlBonCysV8SiJ6lEaPV39Uv9ZyIJn-2BnjiV-2B-2By53WABSqqOFQsubYkceLQ-3D-3DQqeP_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDVGD4r3-2BbZK-2FnZV4xGyzhs-2FkbvRiJfoAToJe-2F2uQdQsVJJtsHA2jfUNljjKe-2FG7rE557hKfWa8AJj2ZZqYOfjmvcF0nmFLBJxP4BajeaLBB2joJ0wn84ktEAkM-2BVaNtmgQ-3D-3D)).
- *Demand-side signal: new.* Last issue had no enterprise-budget pushback. This cycle: the "75%" Anthropic spend-cut plan and BI's "consumption is ahead of the budget."
- *Meta: new business line, weaker stock.* Last issue: Muse-driven "40%" rally and a debate over 2027 capex ($200–240 billion). This cycle: an enterprise platform under CJ Desai, the stock down 4%, and bearish options flow. No new capex figure.
- *AMD: from "priced for no mistakes" to a $1 trillion market cap.* Same Helios caveat: no revenue shipments yet.
- *Micron: now tomorrow.* Last issue: TrendForce's slowdown in DRAM price increases. This cycle: the "50 billion" / "86%" bar and Rasgon's long-term-contract question.
- *Power: consistent.* Last issue: Morgan Stanley saw no slowdown in turbine bookings. This cycle: Bloom's operator view that on-site power is going permanent. No contradiction.

*Next catalysts to watch:* *Micron earnings, Wed Sept 30* (gross-margin guide; long-term-contract pricing; capex). *Q4 starts Oct 1*, and big tech reports at "the end of October" ([Bloomberg Intelligence, Sept 28](http://url7324.matterfact.com/ls/click?upn=u001.idHmPrr2Geh7KYLAsTy7NkrIVb-2FgA4pmf2rMXQwGcOh8fHtU6MS1KjxqLL4O4jgfe-2FtBG28flPez6yWu1YGVKhTo5sMRCNeDwBB2Q6JdNtG-2FhXAOyevyssCz8B-2BVyCKHIWaGz-2BGXHGmRFBZeZPUkBw-3D-3D1VOH_7mLGwmUci-2BLaXswv9WX1yTgqn3Wad-2FotHhzHgSNAZbW8NJDl7U8jKW9KSRpfOEPS9XWzemXhrxdlq7FU3uNiDfTv15p4H6iPrz-2FgTg3LqPpLECTJY4aV-2FRzs7J7y4ZwwqNloW7z7vbIiGjGo9Jzow2of54oJm-2FsvhchV-2FO-2Bjc0cIxXGhx9roWGZI-2F2ecqIcVs3T-2FCzLOHjT7lDIL4s1JnQ-3D-3D)). *The 10-year versus 5%.* *Any Oracle rating action.* *Nvidia's next filing* for receivable days.
